Alazani Valley - the heart of wine Kakheti
- Description
The Alazani Valley (also the Kakheti Plain) is a wide intermountain area, 200 to 225 km long and 20–40 km wide, located between the Greater Caucasus and the Gombori Range in eastern Georgia. The plain's surface lies at an altitude of 200–450 m above sea level, and it is filled with fertile lands, forests, and extensive vineyards.
The Alazani River, which flows through the valley, not only shapes the landscape, but also provides vital irrigation. Its waters create ideal conditions for intensive agriculture and viticulture.
This is one of the most famous wine regions of Georgia, where the Rkatsiteli and Saperavi varieties are grown. Legendary wines such as Kindzmarauli, Mukusani, and others are produced here. The valley's terroir is called "little Tuscany" for its aesthetics and traditions.
Tourists come here for wine, history and panoramic views. The valley is home to Sighnaghi with its cobbled fortress wall, monasteries like Alaverdi, wineries with tastings and underground cellars. Quiet hills, vast vineyards and ramshackle stone farms create a picture that looks like it came straight from a postcard. The Alazani Valley is not just nature, it is an atmosphere that you want to breathe in.
