The top of a wooded hill northwest of Khevischal reveals its mysterious history through the stone walls of the Kachalauri Fortress. This architectural complex, crowning a hill, invites you on a journey into the past of the 8th-9th centuries, leaving an indescribable impression with its multifaceted structure.

The center of the complex is a two-nave church made of rubble and having an unusual, irregular shape. The mesmerizing upper space of the church is impressive with its main nave, short north aisles and arches highlighted by flanged imposts. The entrance to the temple, located in the northern wall, like a gate to the world of antiquity, is complemented by a collapsed door with a mysterious shape.

The church is surrounded to the north by a rectangular storeroom, radiating a mysterious splendor. The shirim decorated external corners, entrance and western façade create a majestic appearance. Inside the storeroom reveals an amazing combination of art and history: fragments of precious stones, ankles of figures, an image of a cavalry warrior and a magnificent Virgin and Child reigning on the eastern wall.

A powerful fence stretched along the hill creates impregnable protection, framing the complex of crushed stone and lime mortar. The towers rising above the fence give the fortress impressiveness and mystery.
