Sveri fortress in Imereti, Georgia.
- Description
In the picturesque region of Imereti, in the Chiatura municipality, just 7 km south of Chiatura, stands the mighty Sveri Fortress - a historical embodiment of grandeur and mystery. Today it is a proud testimony of time, attracting attention with its ruins.
On the map compiled in 1737 by King Alexander V of Imereti, the Sveri Fortress is depicted as an imposing structure with battlements and loopholes, rising on a steep cliff slope. The entrance to it is located on the eastern side, a harbinger of a meeting with mysterious architectural secrets.
The walls of the fortress, revealing their ancient luster, reveal three construction levels, each reflecting its own period of history. The early Middle Ages level rises from half-hewn small squares, arranged in horizontal rows. The level of the developed Middle Ages is distinguished by larger hewn squares. The late medieval level, as if connecting with the past, is composed of a mixture of cobblestones and torn stones.
The history of the Sveri Fortress dates back to the invasion of Marwan ibn Muhammad, known as Murvan the Deaf, into Georgia in the 8th years of the 8th century. Since then, it has gone through eras, witnessing destruction and the suppression of the Imereti uprising in 1810, after which it came under the rule of the Russian Empire and lost its original purpose.
Today, when visiting the Sveri Fortress, you come into contact with a rich history, which is told by the ancient walls and caves on the northern slope. This is a place where roads that have witnessed the past intertwine, and the customs palace and majestic views give the place a special atmosphere. For those who appreciate the secrets of the past and the beauty of immortalized ruins, a visit to the Sveri Fortress will be an exciting journey into the depths of time and culture.
