  • Description

Chkhutuneti Castle (also known as Kalivake or Kalaboni) in Adjara is a magnificent historical structure, rising on the left bank of the Machakhela River, like a guardian of ancient times. Currently, on this high rocky hill, you can find only living ruins of the castle, inspiring with its grandeur.

Chkhutuneti Castle was of strategic and military importance, controlling the road passing through the Machakhela gorge. This route connected the coastal region with Shavsheti, Artanuj and other regions of Southern Georgia. In medieval Adjara, fortifications, including Chkhutuneti Castle, formed a chain, protecting the valley from the source to the sea coast.

Visitors can stroll through the castle's internal area, which covers 200 square meters. Despite the damage, the majestic northern wall, up to 2 meters high, framed by walls 1 meter thick, has been preserved. Various types of buildings are found here, and of particular interest is the tunnel starting from the northern part of the castle and connecting to the river.

The tunnel, about 32 meters long, provided the defenders with the opportunity to secretly obtain water from the river and use it as a shelter. Today, this tunnel has become a witness to the times and offers a unique insight into the engineering solutions of medieval architecture.

Not only the castle, but also a wine cellar discovered nearby, where there were 8 kvevri of different sizes, date back to the 11th-13th centuries. These historical artifacts bring the site's past to life, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Georgia's ancient history.

We invite you to walk through bygone centuries, feel the grandeur of Chkhutuneti Castle and enjoy its unique atmosphere, which takes you to the exciting eras of Georgian history.

Lost in the ruins with a breathtaking view, the true gem here is the underground tunnel. Adventure awaits as you descend into its depths - an exhilarating, safe journey until, suddenly, the exit looms three meters above ground. Wouldn't recommend sandals for this one; almost lost my cool. But for a photographer's heart, the descent was pure magic, illuminated by my phone's light. A must-explore for thrill-seekers!

The fortress is small and has ruined walls. However, the view from the top is excellent. The fortress also has an underground passage, cleared and quite suitable for descent.
