  • Description

The architectural and archaeological monument "Tomb of Bagineti" in Mtskheta is a unique landmark of late antiquity, located north of Mount Kartli, near the Mtskheti railway station, at the foot of a steep cliff. The monument was excavated in 1951 and is a one-room rectangular building built of rubble.

The interior decoration of the Bagineti Tomb is particularly elegant: the walls, semicircular vault, floor and external eastern facade are covered with hewn sandstone tiles, and the inside is plastered with pink hydraulic plaster. The building has a double roof covered with Mtskhetur flat and grooved chemical tiles, and a door blocked by a massive boulder.

The height of the building varies from 1.6 to 2 meters. The yard of the monument is fenced with a high fence. A horse was found in the corner of the yard, and inside were the bones of a woman and a child, boards and metal parts of a wooden sarcophagus. Also found nearby were rich grave goods, including gold absinthe, decorated with semi-precious stones, which had survived the robbers.

In 2014, by decree of the Georgian government, Mtskheti Akldama received the status of a monument of national significance. A visit to the “Tomb of Bagineti” allows you to touch the history of late antiquity, see preserved architectural details and funerary finds, which makes this place interesting for archaeologists, historians and everyone who is interested in ancient civilizations. The monument will be of particular interest to tourists who want to learn more about the cultural heritage of Georgia.
