The Church of St. George of Nakifar (Jgrag) in Mestia is the most important cultural and religious monument of the Zemo Svaneti region. Built in the 10th century, this church attracts attention with its unique frescoes and architecture. The main composition of the paintings is the Savior, which was done by the artist Tedore. One of the main shrines of the church is the 11th century icon of St. George, forged from gold and silver by the jeweler Asan, commissioned by Marushani.

On December 28, 2018, the Georgian government awarded the church the status of an immovable cultural monument of national importance, which emphasizes its importance for the country. The church is located in the center of Mestia, in the cemetery of the Seti region. The building is a spacious hall type with a large semicircular apse and a modern western gate, which makes it architecturally different from other churches in Svaneti.

Historically, there was a monastery on the site of the current temple, and the church itself was built in the 19th century on the foundation of an older temple of the 10th-11th centuries. During Soviet times, the building was used as the first exhibition hall of the Ethnographic Museum of Svaneti. From 1995 to 2013, the church again served as a place of regular worship.

The Church of St. George of Nakifara houses significant religious artifacts, including a unique 11th-century cross depicting the martyrdom of St. George and a gold and silver icon of St. George. In addition, here you can see a large icon of the Savior, a typical example of the 10th century, and an icon of the miraculous Mother of God. These relics are of high artistic and historical value.

The Church of St. George of Nakifar is a place of pilgrimage and a significant cultural attraction. Visitors to Mestia are recommended to visit this temple for a deep understanding of the history and culture of the region, as well as to get acquainted with unique works of Georgian art and relics of Christianity.

    Стоя на холме и глядя на церковь, ощущаешь невероятное спокойствие. Отсюда открываются потрясающие виды на горы и долину, создавая идеальное место для фотографий. Моментальное чувство возвышенности и мир в душе — одним словом, волшебно.

    Всякий раз, когда вспоминаю об этой церкви, словно вновь переношусь туда и чувствую спокойствие окружающих гор. Вроде бы ничего особенного, маленькая церковь, но как только ступаешь на ее древние камни, сердце начинает стучать иначе. Атмосфера здесь какая-то волшебная, как будто время застыло. Ну и место, конечно, само по себе уникальное - с одной стороны суровость Кавказа, с другой - теплота и умиротворение. Этот контраст поражает.

    Сама обстановка, дух и вид этого места прямо наполняют сердце теплотой и покоем. Приятно осознавать, что такие красивые уголки мира существуют. Маленькая отдушина, куда хочется возвращаться.

    Интересное место, но посетить его можно разок и забыть. Атмосфера здесь спокойная, но что-то не хватает... может быть, уюта. Иконы немного поблекшие, нуждались бы в реставрации. А ещё, ожидала увидеть более заботливое отношение к зелени вокруг — трава заросшая, и дорожки к храму могли бы почистить чаще. В целом, всё неплохо, но можно бы и навести порядок.

    小巧的教堂静静地坐落在山坡上，从远处就能看见。我们到的时候，大门是可以进入的，但教堂本身的门锁住了。去山上的十字架或者去Koruldi湖都会经过这里，建议安排时间停车参观一下。

    Such a stunning place of worship. We noticed it perched on a hill and chose to pay a visit. Sadly, it was locked when we arrived. It would have been lovely to see inside. Nonetheless, the architecture is impressive, and the surrounding view is breathtaking. We captured some wonderful photos here.

    Церковь была построена в X веке и отличается от других сванетских храмов богатым декором фасада. Внутри можно увидеть росписи с главным изображением Спасителя, выполненные художником по имени Теодор. Также здесь хранится икона Святого Георгия XI века. Согласно надписи, её изготовил мастер Асан по заказу Марушана, используя золото и серебро. С 28 декабря 2018 года церковь имеет статус недвижимого памятника культуры национального значения, присвоенный правительством Грузии.
