18th century defensive tower in Khashuri

The 18th century defensive tower in Khashuri is a significant architectural monument located in the central part of the city of Khashuri. The structure dates back to the 18th century and is a three-story cylindrical tower built of cobblestones with a diameter of 9 meters. The entrance to the tower is located on the south side at a height of 3 meters from the ground, which made it easier to guard. An arched sandstone door leads to the second floor, from where you can access the lower and upper floors via a staircase built into the wall.

The tower is mentioned in “Kalmasoba” by John Batonishvili, which indicates its historical significance: “He (John) saw the tower of high Khashura in the distance.” Initially, the tower served as a defensive structure and a place to live, being the ancestral property of the Khidirbegishvili family.

On the ground floor of the tower there are 6 niches and several closets. The second floor is equipped with 6 niches, a fireplace and two windows to the north. On the third floor there are 8 niches, each of which is designed to install two cannons, as well as chimneys in the south and north. The fourth floor includes guns and four beakers. The doors to the balconies of this floor are located on the east, west and north sides, while the nests of the balcony posts have been preserved. On the façade of the tower, above the entrance, you can see a recessed cross carved with blue glazed stones.
