Archaeological site "Funeral Tombs of Kaspi"
- Description
The archaeological site "Funeral Tombs of Kaspi" is located in the city of Kaspi, municipality of Kaspi, 1 kilometer to the west, in the valley of the Kura River. This historical monument includes a group of caves carved into limestone headlands 10-15 meters high. The caves resemble ancient funerary tombs and are carved with metal four-pronged tools. Of the four surviving rocks, three were carved in the same massif, and one is located two hundred meters to the east. The caves are raised 3-5 meters above the ground and are made with remarkable precision.
The interior of the first two caves has a rounded square shape with an arched ceiling. Shelves used for burials are carved into the western and northern walls of both rooms. There are open gates in front of the chambers. There is a similar gate in the third cave, although there are no shelves there. The fourth cave has no gate.
These slanted shelves in the caves indicate a non-Christian burial method, the only one so far found in Georgia. The monument differs in its architecture from the Iranian aqdamas of the Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian eras. In their structure and carving technique, the caves have common features with the Georgian rock architecture of late antiquity and early feudal times. The tombs date back to late antiquity or the 4th-6th centuries.
