Workshop, museum and library "Ikalto Qvevri School"
- Description
The Ikalto Qvevri School in Kakheti is a unique educational complex where the ancient methods of Georgian winemaking are being revived and the art of making Qvevri - clay vessels for fermenting wine - is being improved. The creation of this school was made possible thanks to the initiative of Bishop David Alaverdi and financial support from the World Bank. In 2013, the Qvevri winemaking method was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A Qvevri is an egg-shaped clay vessel buried in the ground to create ideal conditions for wine fermentation. Making qvevri is a rare skill that is passed down from generation to generation and involves both mathematical proportions and the intuitive knowledge of the craftsmen.
Ikalto Qvevri School offers its visitors a unique opportunity to learn and try their hand at making Qvevri and other clay vessels. Guests can also explore the art of porcelain, enamel and goldsmithing. The school has a workshop, a museum with centuries-old relics, a library and a modern creative laboratory. The complex is equipped with modern equipment, including a craft clay oven, clay mills and clay washing tanks.
Ikalto Qvevri School is an attractive place for those interested in Georgian history, winemaking and traditional crafts. Here you can not only acquire new skills, but also enjoy the rich cultural heritage of the region. The best time to visit is September and October, when the traditional grape harvest takes place - Rtveli.
