Church of the Plateau (ruins of a church in the rock) in Borjomi
- Description
Plateau Church, also known as the rock church ruins, is an interesting architectural monument located in the municipality of Borjomi. Built between the 10th and 15th centuries, the church sits on a flat rock mountain platform and dates back to the late Middle Ages.
The church is located at the end of the tourist base on the plateau, next to the old cable car. A small path along the cliff leads directly to the church. Built from rough gray stones, the church blends naturally with the surrounding rock and is covered in fir trees, making it almost invisible to the eye. From the church grounds there is a picturesque panorama of the park, the Borjomula River and tall green trees.
Today, the church has been significantly destroyed - the roof and interior have collapsed. The eastern and northern walls are made directly from the rock on which the church is built. In the center of the rock there is a deep crack, previously used as an altar, where there is a processed rectangular stone with a relief cross, characteristic of the late Middle Ages.
The arched facades of the church are devoid of decoration; in the western part there is a narrow arched window framed by a simple frame, typical of that period. At the western wall you can see traces of the foundation of a building supposed to be a tomb.
A visit to the Plateau Church may be of interest to lovers of history and architecture. This place is also attractive for tourists interested in unique cultural monuments and natural attractions. The Plateau Church offers a rare opportunity to see the harmony of architecture and natural formations.
