Every person, going on vacation, wants to visit interesting places. And there are plenty of such places in Georgia. The sights of Georgia are quite diverse: each is interesting and beautiful in its own way. One of them is the Green Monastery.
Location
The Green Monastery is located near the village of Chitakhevi, in the very depths of the deciduous forest, not far from Borjomi. There is a monastery here today, where monks indulge in prayers for the benefit of the state and citizens.
History
There is an assumption that the monastery was built by Christopher and Theodore - followers of Grigol Khanzteli at the turn of the IX-X centuries. The building material was rough stone. There is almost no decor in the monastery. The bell tower has two floors: on the ground floor there is a chapel, and on the second – a charming gazebo decorated with ornaments.
The XVI century was marked by a tragic event for the monastery: Shah Tamaz raided the monastery. The monks were captured, tortured, and then killed. Even in our time, there are terrible traces of this event in the monastery: traces of the spilled blood of monks, remains and bones of the murdered are still found.
Modernity
The restoration work of the monastery took more than a decade: the restoration began in the 80s of the XX century, and was completed only in 2002. Now tourists can see a one-story monastery building, a two-story belfry, a small courtyard with monks' cells and modern outbuildings.
