Old monasteries in Georgia. Visit the famous Zedazeni Monastery.
If you go up to the Zenazdeni Monastery, you will have a view of the beautiful natural views of the Great Caucasian Ridge, Tbilisi and Mtskheta. Even for the sake of this view, it's worth visiting this place! He built the monastery back in the eighth century, thanks to the restoration and repair, the monastery still operates to this day.
In 1946, to the north-east of Mtskheta on the Saguram ridge, in order to protect, study and distribute diverse plants of the Kolkh type, the Saguram Reserve was established. The reserve is a significant recreational area and several resort areas are located in its surrounding areas. Among them: Saguramo, Karsani, Zedazeni, Tsitsamuri, Tserovani, etc
The Zedazeni Monastery is located northwest of Mtskheta, on the left bank of the Aragvi, on the Saguram ridge. This monument has a special location: from here, from the top of a high mountain, endless expanses with views of the Great Caucasian Ridge, Tbilisi and Mtskheta open up.
The monastery was built in the third quarter of the VIII century. The complex includes several structures: the three-nave Basilica of St. John the Baptist, a gate with a bell tower, a fence and the ruins of several outbuildings.
According to the plan, the three-nave Basilica of St. John the Baptist is square. Among the nave is narrow and quite high. There is a semicircular apse on the eastern side of the basilica. Currently, there are two entrances to the temple - from the southern and eastern parts (the eastern entrance was cut later). In the interior there are two pairs of massive supporting columns that divide the structure into three naves. The height of the middle nave is much higher than the side ones. Facades are characterized by simplicity of design. The windows are arranged asymmetrically. The window in the altar part is decorated with a simple image of a cross.
Special attention is drawn to the one-nave church of the VI century located in the eastern nave of the northern part of the cathedral, which ends with a rectangular altar. This church is associated with the name of the famous clergyman John Zedazeneli, one of the Assyrian fathers. His grave is located in the northern part of the cathedral and is partially pushed into the apse. The Holy Father served here together with his disciples. Many miraculous phenomena are associated with his name - by the power of his prayer, a spring with medicinal water was clogged, wild animals were domesticated, etc.
The Zedazeni Monastery has been restored and repaired several times. It is currently active.
Tourists have come to love this place very much, because not every resort can come into contact with ancient history. Georgia gives an opportunity to plunge into the Middle Ages, because temples and fortresses of those times have been preserved everywhere here.
