The Vachnadziani monastic complex or "All Saints Church in Vachnadziani". This mysterious, holy place combines the cathedral of Blessed Vachnadzi and the remains of the monastic buildings. The monastic complex is hidden far away in the forest, which makes the way to it difficult to reach, but so fascinating and mystical!
The most beautiful places in Georgia represent not only amazing landscapes, but also various architectural and cultural monuments, buildings.
For example, in the Kakheti municipality of Gurjaani, eight kilometers from the village of Vachnadziani, there is the Vachnadziani monastery complex, which combines the cathedral of the Blessed Vachnadziani (Temple of the Virgin Mary), as well as the St. George's Basilica and the remains of the monastery buildings.
Shrine of the Blessed Vachnadziani
The building is one of the most important monuments of its era and belongs to the constructions of the transition period. The monument is equated with the period of the VIII-IX centuries. Artistic interests and traditions of that epoch, the desire for innovation are reflected in the composition of the temple, in its architectural solution, decoration, which will be very interesting to see when visiting Georgia.
Temple architecture
Inside the Precious Vachnadziani there is a domed hall (kupelhale). A dome, erected in the center of an Apsidian boat, rests on the wall. Outside around the boat is an entrance. The patronage is positioned on the head of the side boat. The square, above which the dome rises, is surrounded on all sides by arches. These in turn rest on crowned pilasters. The underdome square transitions to the throat of the dome itself with a sail. The neck of the dome is in the form of a cylinder. Four windows extend from it, located in the western and southern walls, on the upper part. There are also three windows at the altar apse. Absolutely all of the window openings have horseshoe ends.
The walls of the temple were built of cobblestone and brick, hewn stone screen was used in the construction of the corners and openings. A characteristic feature of the facade of the church is a flat apse. A three-stage cornice lies on the projections of the altar, as well as under the roof of the north sleeve; a one-stage cornice has been preserved on the projections of the triconch and on part of the corners of the west side.
The walls of the temple were painted in the 16th century. The images belong to the Gareji school. There are also the remains of the fine art on the southern and western walls.
The anteroom of the temple was included in the fence, which was enclosed around the temple.
St. George Church in Vachnadziani
The Church of St. George is about fifty meters from the main cathedral.
The structure is a three-church basilica from the VI-VII centuries. The horseshoe apse is the end of the main boat. Rectangular vestibules lie on either side of the apse. Cobblestones and bricks were used as the building material of the church, the corners and structural details were made of yellowish hewn screen. A branch was added to the east side of the cobblestone church. Under it is a vaulted crypt.
There is a vaulted crypt beneath the building, so the floor of the south church is slightly higher compared to the floor of the main boat.
The church itself consists of two independent parts. Three windows are located on the facade of the structure, with another rectangular window next to the altar.
Church of St. George is almost completely destroyed, the building is badly damaged, only its eastern part remains in good condition.
Sights of Georgia - the history of the country, the embodiment of its traditions and values. To preserve the monuments of history, culture and architecture is the most important task of all mankind.
