Among the temples of Batumi, it is impossible not to notice the Church of the Holy Trinity, standing on the mountain of the same name near the center of the capital of Adjara. It can be seen from almost all points of the city. This is one of the most significant sights of Georgia.
There is often a prefix to the name of the temple — Sameba, which is not surprising, because it means "trinity".
History of the temple
The church on the top of the mountain was built in the second half of the 19th century, but it has not been preserved in its original form to this day.
Like all other churches, in the 30s the Church of the Holy Trinity ceased to operate. The premises were transferred to the needs of the city authorities. Services resumed in the cathedral in 1947. Luke Shevchuk was appointed rector. Parishioners highly appreciated the art of the church choir of 30 people.
The old temple, which stood on the mountain, died in a fire in 1976, but was restored three years later. The church was built of light yellow stone, the walls are decorated with frescoes, ornaments and carvings.
Not far from the church is the Trinity Convent. Financial assistance in the construction of the monastery complex was provided by businessman Shalva Breus, who lives in Russia. Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II awarded the patron with the Order of St. George, the highest church award.
A large-scale restoration was carried out several years ago, in 2010-2011. So, now the temple looks great and is popular among parishioners and curious tourists. Nearby is a separate bell tower building with nine bells.
The territory is well landscaped. Behind the main entrance, visitors first see the church shop, beautiful terraces and walking paths. The temple is located on the very top of the mountain.
It is also worth going up to the Sameba church for the sake of beautiful views of the city and the surrounding area from the observation deck near the temple. You will see the most beautiful places of Georgia.
