What to see in Georgia? St. George Monastery Complex. History and architecture of the ancient temple.
Svyato-Georgievsky monastery complex - is considered a monument of the nineteenth century. Despite the simplicity and grayness of the structure, this place attracts tourists. You should visit the picturesque village of Teleti at least once and you will want to come back here again.
If you suddenly wonder what to see in Georgia, go to the region of Kvemo Kartli, in the village of Zemo Teleti, Gardabani municipality. It is there where St. George monastery complex is located.
History
The complex is considered a monument of XIX century, but Vakhushti Batonishvili, who lived in XVIII century, wrote about the church, located on the same place. Therefore, it is believed that the monument was built on the site of an older structure.
The church of St. George is subordinate to the Georgian Orthodox Church since 1992, but for some time it was assigned to the Armenian Monophysite Church.
The monastic complex was also founded in 1992 and includes the St. George Church, a four-story bell tower, cells and fences built a little later than the church and bell tower.
Architecture
The sights of Georgia are unique in their own way. For example, the main difference between the St. George monastery complex in Teleti is a departure from the traditional three-nave basilica.
All its three naves are located under one roof, the outer masses are not assigned the distribution of interior space. The entrance to the church is from two sides, the south and west, they are framed by a roller frame, with relief crosses depicted on top.
The temple cannot boast of any exquisite painting. The color of the facades is gray, they are laid out of hewn stone, in the frontal area there are stones of different colors between each other. The western frontal facade is decorated with a relief image of St. George. There are no other decorative elements besides this one.
The facades do not have eaves, and the roof lies directly on the walls. Inside the walls of the church are fully painted. The second floor of the bell tower, located to the east of the temple, houses the church of St. Nino and the church of Baptism of John the Baptist.
The fourth floor of the bell tower is a sort of pergola, whose columns are very simply decorated, while the third floor is open on all sides with arches.
The bell tower itself is built of various kinds of stones and bricks.
St. George's monastery complex in Teleti can hardly be called the most beautiful place in Georgia, because it does not differ with elegance of forms and rich decoration. But it is its simplicity that attracts, so it is worth at least once to visit the village of Teleti and admire the views that open up to the vast spaces around the monastery.
