Cultural and historical tourism in Georgia! The fortress is the village of Shatili. UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Shatili is the most famous and most colorful village in Khevsureti. The fortress is a well-organized and fortified complex of residential defensive towers. Khevsuri fortresses stood guard not only for the village, but also for the whole of Georgia. Find out the history of Shatili and touch it with your hands.
Well organized and fortified Shatili Fortress defended Georgia from the northern invaders throughout the entire time of its existence. It is almost completely preserved in its original form. The Georgian village of the same name with the fortification is located in the Dusheti municipality closer to Mtskheta-Mtianeti. Located on the border with Chechnya and 160 kilometers from the capital of Georgia, it rises at the mouth of the Arguni and Shatilistskali rivers at 1400 meters above sea level.
Despite the fact that from cities of Tbilisi only 160 kilometers, the road takes a long time. The reason lies in the complexity of the path. When the forest-steppe zone ends, the mountain zone begins. This area is characterized by verdant plants and snow cover in places, even in the hot season. When the mountains are left behind, suddenly the fortress-tower of Shatili appears in front of you. This view will remove from you all the tightness and difficulty of overcoming the road.
Khevsuret fortresses, located on the rocks of the northern part of Georgia, played a protective role not only for this village, but also for the whole country. In the event of an invasion of nomads, these fortifications were the first to notice the danger. The houses are located very close, and thus create a single protective wall. Small fortifications are located in a terraced style and are separated by a stone staircase.
Between the districts into which the village of Shatili is divided, and these are Anatori, Kavchi, Shuasopeli and Zenubari, there are small streets. In front of the entrance to Shatili stands apart a small building consisting of one floor – “sapihvno". Despite its size, this structure plays an important role in the life of the settlement: men from all over the village gather here and are engaged in discussing and solving pressing issues.
