The best sights in Georgia. The observatory in Abastumani.
Tsarevich Georgy Romanov was very keen on astronomy, so on his initiative, a small structure was built near his palace, which became the basis for initial astronomical observations. Already in the first third of the twentieth century, a mountain observatory was built near this structure, which was the first, where in 1935 scientists found a small planet, then named Abastumani.
On the initiative of Tsarevich George Alexandrovich, in 1896-1899 in Abastumani A church named after St. Alexander Nevsky was built. This church is a kind of Georgian architectural monument of the VIII-IX centuries of Romanticism. Therefore, this church was called the "New Zarzma". In 1902-1904, the church was painted by the famous Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov.
On the southern slopes of the Meskhetian ridge, covered with coniferous trees, there is a famous mountain climatic and balneological resort Abastumani, the climate of which is curative for the prevention of lung diseases. It is especially useful in spring, when pine pollination begins. Abastumani is known not only for its climate - its main therapeutic factor - but also for hyperthermal (39°- 4865 °C), weakly mineralized springs.
On the site of the modern resort at the beginning of our era there was a densely populated city of Odzrhe. Even in ancient times, this city was famous for its healing waters. As the outstanding Georgian geographer Vakhushti Botanishvili testifies, since the beginning of the XVII century, when the Turks dominated the city, they called this place "Chemik-Bogaz" ("chemik" - warm, "bogaz" - valley), the modern name probably comes from the surname of the local princes Abazasdze.
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Grand Duke, a representative of the royal family, Georgy Alexandrovich Romanov, settled in Abastumani to treat a serious lung ailment. A bathhouse with therapeutic thermal waters and a palace were built especially for the tsarevich. Tsarevich Georgy Romanov, who was passionate about astronomy, invited his friend, astronomer and professor of St. Petersburg University Sergey Glazenap to Abastumani. Not far from the tsarevich's palace, they built a small domed structure, where they placed a telescope brought from St. Petersburg. Thus, the foundation was laid for the first astronomical observations in Abastumani, and in 1932, 8 kilometers from Abastumani, on Mount Kanobili, at an altitude of 1,650 m above sea level, an astrophysical observatory was founded on the initiative of Professor Yevgeny Kharadze. It was the first mountain astrophysical observatory in the Soviet Union.
In 1935, the observatory staff discovered a small planet No. 1390, which was named Abastumani.
