Gori, one of the oldest settlements on the territory of modern Georgia and one of the largest cities - is the capital of the Shida Kartli region. Historical monuments located in and around Gori will not leave indifferent the most demanding travelers and tourists.
The first documentary records of settlements on the territory of Gori date back to the 7th century AD. According to the results of various archaeological studies the first urban settlements appeared on the territory of Gori in the 1 st century BC.
The ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe
Uplistsikhe cave city, one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus region, is located 10 km from Gori. The settlement was established at the end of the 2nd century B.C. Out of 700 caves and various constructions, which had been on the territory of Uplistsikhe, only about 150 remains.
Currently, Uplistsikhe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important monuments of Georgian culture. During its long history, Gori has become the center of military conflicts more than once.
One of the important attractions of the ancient city is the fortress of Gori, which appeared in the 13th century. During the Gori earthquake of February 1920 most of the buildings were destroyed. Some of the historical monuments were damaged.
Of the modern monuments and museums that have appeared in the post-Soviet era, it is worth mentioning the Stalin Museum. In addition to it, in Gori there is a whole "cluster" of objects dedicated to the immortalization of the name of the Generalissimo - a park and an avenue, as well as Stalin Square.
Memorial to the defenders of the fortress of Goristsikhe
Not far from the ancient fortress of Goristikhe there is a memorial monument dedicated to the strength and courage of Georgian soldiers. This interesting composition symbolizes the tragic events of 2008, related to the military conflicts in the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Brave knights in armor and with weapons are ready to fight for their beloved Georgia at any time.
Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Beautiful view of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Gori and the Church of St. John the Baptist can be seen from the top of the hill in the center of Gori. The temple was built in the 18th century. During the Soviet era, the building was used as a warehouse, a music school, and numerous religious valuables were removed. Today it is a functioning Orthodox church, attracting pilgrims from all over the world.
