Iconic religious sights in Tbilisi
Four of the most interesting religious sights in Tbilisi, which will be extremely interesting to tourists. Their descriptions can be found in the directory for travelers in Georgia "Madloba"
The capital of Georgia is Tbilisi -this is a powerful synthesis of historical and cultural heritage and the entourage of modern architecture. It has everything that a fastidious tourist needs: picturesque natural landscapes, harmonious interweaving of modern and archaic architecture, gastronomic delights and many places whose chronicle has been numbered for centuries.
Special attention should be paid to the religious buildings of Tbilisi - cathedrals, temples, churches. The architecture of Georgian ritual institutions is unique. It is very different from what is found in other countries. Today we want to introduce you to the most iconic of them, so that when traveling in Georgia, you know what you need to visit first.
Tsminda Sameba
The Georgian Holy Trinity Cathedral adorns one of the oldest districts of Tbilisi, Avlabari. Architect Archil Mindiashvili supervised the construction of the building. Thanks to his idea, a structure appeared in the capital, which attracts the eyes of thousands of tourists every year. It was erected during a difficult period for Georgia, and a curious fact is connected with this: the state could not allocate the necessary amount from the budget, most of the money was collected by the efforts of caring well-wishers.
In addition to the aboveground part, the cathedral also has as many as two underground floors, which anyone can get into. The total area of the cathedral complex, together with other buildings, exceeds 5000 m2. A visit to the temple is a real mini-trip for all guests of the capital. Despite the relative youth of the complex, it plays a particularly important role among similar religious buildings in Tbilisi.
Date of construction: 1995 - 2004
Metekhi Temple
Everything is remarkable in it - from the design of the building itself to its location. It stands on the cliff of the Metekhi rock above the Mtkvari River, located in the center of Tbilisi. The temple was built in the 13th century, but subsequently underwent dozens of destructions and restorations.
We also observe its construction, which has been preserved since the 16th century. Metekhi is a pronounced example of characteristic Georgian architecture, with its inherent laconic forms, light colors and a complete absence of exterior decor. Tourists can admire the interior of the church, as well as enjoy the pleasant scenery.
Zion Cathedral
The main feature of this structure is that it was actually built for 15 centuries. The church was first built in the 6th century. Further, it was repeatedly destroyed, however, instead of being built from scratch, the designers completed it on the basis of the surviving fragments. So it turned out that the temple consists of parts belonging to different eras.
It also houses a unique relic - the cross of Saint Nina, the first propagator of Christianity in Georgia. You can find this religious architectural monument in “old Tbilisi”, on Sioni Street, after which it is named.
Anchiskhati Church
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the oldest church on the territory of modern Tbilisi. The first mention of it dates back to the 6th century. An interesting fact is that during the Soviet Union the church had a different purpose - it was converted into a museum. Architecturally, it differs from its “brethren”, which is why it is remarkable. One of the best choirs in the whole of Georgia also performs in the church.
Visitors have the opportunity to enjoy masterfully painted icons and professional chants. To visit Anchiskhati Church, you will have to go to the northern part of “old Tbilisi".
