ANAKLIA RESORT
Anaklia had close trade ties with neighboring countries. Ships brought salt, crockery, iron and weapons from Trabzon and Constantinople. From Georgia were exported corn, boxwood, honey, silk, bullskin, clay and beaver furs. People were traded. Abkhaz and Mingrelian princes sold their subordinates to the Ottomans.
According to legend, the name Anaklia is associated with the slave trade: it turns out that a child was stolen from his mother and sold. The woman stood on the shore of the sea, sobbing desperately. Hearing her wailing, someone said, "ana rkiyans" ("mother cries"). "Anarkia" later became Anaklia.
