Where mineral waters flow in Georgia. Picturesque natural valleys. Nunis Valley.
The Nunistskali Valley is known not only for its picturesque landscapes, open spaces, but also for its healing mineral waters. With these waters, the population treated many diseases, for example, scabies. There are many legends about the discovery of waters, and the forests of this valley are untouched by man.
In the valley of the Nunisi River, southwest of the village of Nunisi, there is a 25-meter waterfall, not distinguished by an abundance of water. But even in summer, this small waterfall does not dry out and gives the overall landscape a kind of beauty.
One kilometer from the waterfall begins a hiking route along the "path of the Untouched forest". The shortest road of this route passes through the National Park. The route starts from the Nunisi guard post and continues to the Curtain guard post (Borjomi Municipality). This route is especially interesting in April and May – during the flowering period of the Caucasian rhododendron. The duration of the route is presumably 6 hours in one direction, and its length is only 12-13 km.
The Nunistskali Valley is known for its healing mineral (balneological) waters. In the north-eastern part of the Borjomi – Kharagauli National Park, in the foothills of the Likh ridge, at an altitude of 750 m above sea level, there is the famous balneological resort Samta Nunisi.
With the waters of Nunisi, the local population treated a skin disease – scabies. Therefore, the village was nicknamed Nunisi ("muni" in Georgian. – scabies). Gradually, the name "Munisi" was transformed into Nunisi.
There are many legends about the discovery of the waters of Nunisi. One of them is connected with the name of David Agmashenebeli. According to this legend, King David was returning from the battlefield. On the way, the wounded and tired horses entered the water of the mineral spring. The horses could not be taken out of the water for a long time. The water healed their abrasions. David liked the village, and he ordered to build a temple here. This temple – the Church of the Virgin – has survived to our time.
2 km from the church, in the depths of the forest, there is a place called the Monks' Rock. There are three caves in the rock. According to legend, in ancient times the Church of the Virgin Nunisi was connected with the Rock of the monks by a secret cave.
