The best canyons of Georgia. Monuments of the Georgian nature. Tmogvi Canyon.
Tmogvi Canyon is notable for the fact that Tmogvi is made entirely of volcanic rocks. On one of the rocks stands the fortress of the same name, which seamlessly merges with the rest of the rocks. Around the fortress there are many ruins, proving that there was life here.
The main river of Georgia, the Kura, flows near Vardzia, from a sloping slope along a canyon-like valley. The canyon is formed between the volcanic massif of Erusheti and the Javakheti volcanic plateau. The depth of the canyon reaches 500 m in some places. The slopes of the canyon are steep and precipitous at the top, and gentle at the bottom. Volcanic boulders sometimes fall from the upper part of the slope, cluttering the bottom of the canyon.
There are many man-made cave complexes in this section of the river valley, including Vardzija, Van Cauldrons, etc. On one of the highest volcanic rocks of the valley is a fortified city of the 10th century Tmogvi. This architectural monument is organically fused with the mountainous rocky relief. The western part of the city-fortress is strengthened by the fence and the columns erected in three levels on a sloping slope of a rock. From the south-eastern part the wall of the fortress is near the entrance to the secret cave, through which you can pass to the citadel and to Kura.
Around the fortress the remains of dwellings, bathhouses and household buildings were found. On the river the ruins of the bridge supports were preserved. One of the bridges had connected two palaces on both banks of the river, and the other was intended for transport. The city-fortress was destroyed several times by an earthquake.
