Part of Machakhela – Upper Machakhela – is still part of Turkey today.
In 2012, the valley was declared a national park. The park was created to protect organic agriculture, local architecture, cultural heritage, as well as landscape and biological diversity. The park includes the municipalities of Kedi and Khelvachauri and is located at an altitude of 300-500 meters above sea level. The border zone with the valley, located on the territory of Turkey, is also declared a Nature reserve.
There are many cultural and historical monuments on the territory of Machakhela National Park: arched bridges of different periods, fortresses. Limestone presses and wine cellars (marani). On the territory of the park there are two simple pedestrian routes integrated with a car route that offer tourists walks through forests where alder, beech, chestnut grow. From here you can look from the Arkhangelsk mountain to the panorama of Batumi, see the Machakhela Valley from above and the place where the Chorkhi River flows into the Black Sea.
Machakhela National Park is part of the ecological corridor that connects the south-western protected areas (Mtirala and Kintrishi), as well as the north-eastern protected areas (in particular, the Jamila Biosphere Reserve). The Machakhelistskali River originates in Turkey, on the southern slope of the Shavshet ridge, at an altitude of 2285 m above sea level, near the village of Machakhlispiri merges with the Chorokhi River.

How to get:
The route through the Mtirala National Park begins in the village of Chakvi; an asphalt road leads to the village of Hala of the Kobulet municipality, then a rocky road stretches to the village of Chakvistavi. The distance from Chakvi to the administration of the National Park is 15 km. The distance from Tbilisi is 390 km, from Khelvachauri – 15 km, from the highway Akhaltsikhe – Kobuleti - Batumi to the village of Acharistskali – 10 km.
