Go for a walk in the Arboretum⬇️
There are many beautiful corners in Georgia where pristine nature has been preserved. In addition to them, arboretums and botanical gardens are being created, in which plants characteristic not only of Georgia are presented. These parks have large collections of plants, birds, and animals from around the world.
There are several such amazing places on the Black Sea coast. We will tell you about the parks located near Batumi and Kobuleti.
Shekvetili Arboretum Park
One of such places is the arboretum park in Shekvetili. It opened on July 15, 2020. It is located 45 kilometers from Batumi. The arboretum is 15 km from the resort village of Kobuleti.
A little history
The park was created at the expense of Bidzina Ivanishvili, a famous Georgian politician and billionaire.
The construction lasted 4 years. Since 2016, large and small trees from the regions of Georgia have been brought here by land and water. Some of the plants and birds came from other countries, from different continents.
Exact data on financial costs are not known to the masses. There is only fragmentary information. So, the delivery of four huge baobabs from Kenya cost Ivanishvili $ 850,000. And he bought one hundred-year-old baobab in Georgia for $45,000.
The construction process of the arboretum was under the intense attention of the Georgian media, human rights activists and eco-activists. Ivanishvili was more often scolded, accused of using state resources for his own purposes, violating the natural balance of Georgia, harming nature, changing the landscape, etc.
Ivanishvili bought trees from the owners of land plots, paid compensation for the inconvenience. The funds came from his "Kartu" fund.
When transporting trees, a lot of inconveniences were created for local residents: traffic jams, power outages and even a temporary stop of railway transport.
To the accusations against him, he replied:
"My passion for trees may be a whim, but the country and the people only benefit from it."
In addition, according to Ivanishvili, a large number of jobs have appeared for residents of Georgia during the preparatory work for the creation of the park zone.
Political scientists believed that in this way the leader of the Georgian Dream party attracted voters before the 2020 elections.
One way or another, but the arboretum has been created. In just one year of its existence, it has already received many visitors. The reviews are only positive.
What to see in the park
The area of the arboretum in Shekvetili is about 60 hectares. Plants transported from various corners are planted on 18 hectares. Among them are 29 rare species. The remaining 42 hectares are occupied by century-old trees from around the world, from all continents. In total, more than 200 species of unique vegetation are collected in the park.
The territory is landscaped. There are walking alleys with signs, cute bridges, flower beds. Benches, hanging sofas in the shade of trees are available for rest. There are drinking fountains and sanitary rooms.
The alley from the entrance leads around an artificial lake. More than 58 species of birds live along its shores and on an island in the center. Among them are parrots, ducks, swans, herons, peacocks, toucans and other birds. In order for the birds to feel free, but could not fly away, a kind of mesh dome was created over the lake.
The highlight of the arboretum is pink flamingos. Many visitors come here just for them. The only difficulty is the fence, which does not allow you to get close to the lake. It is quite difficult to see birds from afar.
There is an aviary with lemurs near the bird kingdom. A lot of children usually gather here.
Walking through the park, visitors pass through a pretty bamboo grove. The guests are also very interested in giant trees: eucalyptus, sequoias, ginkgo and others. Everywhere there are information signs with information about the name, place of growth, etc.
The time for a walk is 2-3 hours.
