Beautiful gorges in Georgia. Visit the Daryal Gorge.
The Daryal gorge reaches a length of eleven kilometers, and the height extends for thousands of meters. Previously, this gorge had great military and geographical significance. Now there is a highway that connects Russia and Georgia. We certainly advise you to pay attention.
Daryal Gorge It is located in the north of Georgia, in the border zone with Russia, in the basin of the Terek River. It was formed in Paleozoic granitoids, which are the result of volcanism developed 300-400 ml. years in the extreme eastern part of the Greater Caucasus Range.
The gorge cut into volcanic rocks is very narrow and has steep slopes. Its length is 11 kilometers, and the relative height reaches a thousand meters. Several types of landscapes are represented within the gorge, among which paleoglacial, volcanic and erosion-denudation reliefs, coniferous forests, alpine and subalpine meadows dominate.
The word "Daryal" comes from the Persian expression and means "Alan (Ossetian) gate". Georgians call it the "gate of Aragvi", as the Terek was previously called Aragva. Other peoples call this gorge the gates of Iberia, the gates of the Caspian Sea, the gates of Sarmatia, the gates of the gorge, etc.
The Daryal gorge had a great military-geographical purpose. It connected the North and South Caucasus, although for many centuries the gorge was quite a difficult transport artery for movement: frequent avalanches in winter and strong rockfalls in summer closed the gorge many times.
The Georgians built military fortifications in the Daryal Gorge in the first century in order to protect themselves from the northern tribes. Currently, the gorge is an object of constant surveillance - there is a road connecting Russia with Georgia, as well as a gas pipeline.
