🏺 Shumi Museum - a journey into a thousand-year history

The Georgian Wine Museum, located on the territory of the Shumi Wine Complex, is not just an exhibition. 🍇 It is a real repository of knowledge, where the entire history of Georgian winemaking comes to life, starting from the 5th millennium BC. ⏳ Here, every room and every object is part of a living story about how wine culture was formed in Georgia. 🇬🇪🍷

In 2005, SHUMI founded the First Wine Museum in Georgia, which contains exhibits of ancient Georgian traditions of life and winemaking. 🏺 Most of the exhibits are artifacts found during archaeological excavations in Kakheti. 🕵️‍♂️ The oldest artifacts in the museum are over 6,000 years old, and they represent the life and development of winemaking in different eras of Georgia. 🗓️🍾

🧱 Atmosphere of antiquity: open-air museum

The museum consists of both indoor and outdoor exhibits. You can walk among ancient grape presses, massive clay qvevri, archaic fermentation vats, traditional wine storage vessels and other exhibits found in archaeological excavations throughout Georgia.

🖼️ In each hall you are accompanied by:

  • Information signs in Georgian, English and Russian
  • Audio guides and personal tours
  • Decoration stylized as ancient Georgian wineries

🍇 Key exhibits and interactive zones

📜 Ancient artifacts
The exhibition includes household items and winemaking tools, the age of which ranges from 500 to 6,000 years. Among them:

🍇 Collection of rare grape varieties
A vivarium with 300+ varieties of indigenous grapes has been created on the museum’s territory. This is a living part of the exhibition, where you can see varieties that have disappeared in other regions of the country.

🖼️ Ethnographic section
A separate pavilion tells about the role of wine in religion, holidays and rituals. Exhibits related to traditional Georgian feasts, musical and spiritual practices are presented.

Shumi Museum sounds like a fascinating place to explore the rich history of Georgian wine. The blend of traditional and modern winemaking techniques is intriguing. The chance to see ancient tools and processes up close, especially the massive clay qvevri, must be an unforgettable experience. The wine tasting is definitely a highlight, too. This seems like a perfect spot for both wine enthusiasts and those interested in cultural history.

Visiting the Shumi Wine Museum in Tsinandali was a fascinating journey into the heart of Georgian winemaking. The open-air exhibition, with its ancient wine presses and large clay qvevris, offers a unique glimpse into wine production techniques that have been used for centuries. Observing the traditional methods of grape processing was both educational and enriching. The wine tasting session was the highlight, allowing me to savor the unique flavors produced by Shumi Winery. This place is steeped in history, and the interactive displays enhance the overall cultural experience. A must-visit for anyone interested in the traditions and history of winemaking!
