Machakhel Historical and Ethnographic Museum in Zeda Chkutuneti - a unique collection of the history of Adjara

From idea to implementation

The Machakhela Museum opened on June 9, 1984, thanks to the enthusiasm of local resident Zurab Nagervadze. He collected exhibits to preserve the cultural heritage of the region.

After his death in 1995, the museum was taken over by his son Malkhaz Nagervadze, who continued his father's work.

In 2007, the museum became part of the Khelvachauri Cultural Center and received a new name - Chkhutuneti Historical and Ethnographic Museum.

What can you see in the museum?

The museum's exhibition covers different periods of Adjara's history, including archaeological finds and folk artefacts.

🔹 Antique furniture and utensils — household items used in Adjara centuries ago.

🔹 Weapons and armor — guns, daggers, elements of warriors' protective equipment.

🔹 Works of folk craftsmen — wood carving, silverware, ceramics and textiles.

🔹 Photographs and documents — historical photographs and archival records that tell about the life of the region.

What weapons were produced in Machakhela?

During the wars with the Ottoman Empire, there was a weapons production in the Machakhela Gorge.

Here, the "topi Machakhela" guns were created - some of the best at that time. They had high accuracy and reliability, which made them popular among soldiers.

📌 One of the surviving examples of the "topi Machakhela" gun is exhibited in the museum and is the pride of the exposition.
