The museum was founded in 1957.
It contains rich archaeological materials: objects from the Neolithic, Eneolithic, Bronze, Antique and Feudal periods such as battle weapons and tools, pottery, ritual stones, necklaces, fibulas decorated with different images, bronze sculpture of "preacher" from the 7th-7th centuries B.C. and others; manuscripts from the Feudal era; numismatic collection: silver Colchisian Tetri coins, copper, silver and gold coins of various kinds. The museum also includes manuscripts of the feudal era, letters; a numismatic collection of Kolkhetri silver coins, copper, silver and gold coins minted by various mints; paleontological materials; a diverse ethnographic collection; artistic paintings, etc.
