The best museums in Georgia. Ilya Chavchavadze State Museum in Kvareli.
The Ilya Chavchavadze State Museum in Kvareli is a fairly large museum. There is a low tower, the house itself and an exhibition hall named after Ilya Chavchavadze. Here you can see memorabilia of Ilya and his family, handwritten texts of not only Ilya, but also other figures, household items, weapons and much more.
The museum complex includes a family tower, a residential building and an exhibition hall of the Georgian writer and public figure, the "uncrowned King of Georgia" Ilya Chavchavadze (1837-1907).
The museum houses memorial items of Ilya and his family members, manuscripts, sets of magazines and newspapers founded by him, household items, weapons of the XVIII-XIX centuries, furniture, manuscripts of Georgian and foreign public figures, paintings created on the themes of Ilya's works, rich photographic materials and archival documents, editions of Ilya's works in various languages.
Ilya Chavchavadze was born in the family of a retired officer, Prince Grigol Chavchavadze. His mother passed away when he was 10 years old, and his father when he was 15. The poet's first poem, "Kvareli Mountains", which reflects the poet's transitional age, was in a certain sense a "transitional ritual", a sign of the formation of his personal maturity. In 1848, Ilya Chavchavadze studied at one of the best private boarding schools in Rayevsky. In 1851, to continue his studies, Ilya moved to the fourth grade of the Tbilisi Gymnasium. Since 1857, Ilya has been a student at the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University. From the very beginning, he intensively studied the history of Georgia and Georgian literature. During his student years, he wrote works that had a wide public response and were a new stage in Georgian literature of the nineteenth century and the history of artistic thinking. His letter "A couple of words" served as the basis for the struggle between "fathers" and "children". In 1861, he returned to Georgia and led the national liberation movement. In 1863 Ilya Chavchavadze founded the magazine "Sakartvelos moambe" (Bulletin of Georgia). At various times he worked as a mediator and a judge. In 1875, he was elected chairman of the Tbilisi Land Bank. From 181 he was chairman of the Drama Society founded by him, and in 1879-1885 – deputy, then from 1885 – chairman of the Society for the Dissemination of Literacy among Georgians. In 1877 Ilya Chavchavadze founded the newspaper "Iveria".
Ilya devoted all his energy to the cause of consolidating the Georgian people, revitalizing and raising the national and social consciousness of people. Later he wrote: "They say about me that he judges the shortcomings of Georgians, does not hide our shortcomings, but this is real hatred! Fools say that. A good heart sees for itself how much love there is in this hatred!". It is this pathos that permeates the entire exposition of the museum.
