Yakov Nikoladze is a famous Georgian sculptor. His house-museum now displays a variety of sculptures, including busts, portraits of different personalities, their figures, sketches made by him personally. Also in the house is a large collection of photographs and other documentary materials.
The building of the Yakov Nikoladze Museum was erected in 1924 by the architect Anatoly Kalgin. The house-museum was founded in 1956 on the basis of an apartment-workshop of the Georgian sculptor Yakov Nikoladze (1876-1951). The exposition includes sculptures. Busts, portraits, figures, sketches, drawings by Yakov Nikoladze, photo and documentary material.
Yakov Nikoladze received professional education first in Moscow (Stroganov Central Art School) and Odessa (Odessa Drawing School), then in Paris (High School of Art). He was a pupil of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The period of work with Rodin is reflected in the book of memoirs by Ya. Nikoladze's book "One Year with Rodin".
Yakov Nikoladze is considered to be the founder of modern Georgian realistic sculpture. He was one of the founders of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. Of his works we should especially note "Mourning Georgia" (the tombstone of Ilya Chavchavadze), portraits of Sh. Rustaveli, A. Tsereteli, Chakhrukhadze, Iv. Beritashvili, Iv. Javakhishvili, Sh. Aminarashvili and others.
