Not even fans of the work of the famous artist Moshe Toidze should visit his house-museum, because it conveys the incredible spirit of history. The main part of the collection, of course, are paintings and drawings by the artist himself, but there are also many items that simply relate to his life: furniture, library, personal archive.
Mose Toidze House Museum It was founded in 1968 on the basis of the workshop of the Georgian artist Mose Toidze (1871-1953). The main part of the exhibition is represented by paintings and graphics by the People's Artist of Georgia, academician Moshe Toidze.
The museum houses photographic and documentary materials reflecting the life and work of the artist, the personal archive of Mose Toidze, memorial items, furniture, and a library. The museum also exhibits and stores works by other famous artists: graphics and paintings by Irakli and George Toidze, works by E. Bagdavadze, K. Magalashvili, R. Gvelesiani, K. Sanadze, R. Grigoryan, V. Krotkov, E. Kibrik, B. Vogel, Musayev and others; sculptures by Yakov Nikoladze and Kote Merabishvili; collected by Mose Toidze himself ethnographic collection, porcelain products, etc.
Mose Toidze's father, Ivane Toidze, was a famous decorative artist, and his mother, Maka Turkestanashvili, was engaged in fine art embroidery. M. Toidze was educated at the private school of Papidashvili (Papidova) in Tbilisi, then at a vocational school.
After graduating from college in 1887, he continued working there as a drawing teacher. The artist collaborated productively with Georgian magazines and newspapers "Kvali" (Trace), "Sakholkho purceli" (People's Leaflet), "Dzhedzhili" (Field), "Nakaduli" (Spring), etc.
In 1896, with the support and financial assistance of Ilya Chavchavadze, Moshe Toidze was enrolled in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the class of Ilya Repin. Together with his studies at the Academy, at the invitation of Repin, Toidze worked in Repin's workshop, supervised practical classes in painting.
In his work "The Appearance of Christ" Repin used the face of Mose Toidze as a prototype of God. In 1922, Mose Toidze created an art studio, where Ucha Japaridze, Mikhail Chiaureli, Soliko Virsaladze, Korneli Sanadze, Ketevan Magalashvili, Tamar Abakelia and others studied. From 1930 until the end of his life, Mose Toidze headed the painting department at the Academy of Fine Arts.
