Mose Toidze's father, Ivane Toidze, was a famous artist-decorator, and his mother, Maka Turkestanashvili, was engaged in fine artistic embroidery. M. Toidze received his education at the Papidashvili (Papidov) private school in Tbilisi, then at a vocational school.

After graduating from the school in 1887, he continued working there as a drawing teacher. The artist productively collaborated with Georgian magazines and newspapers "Kvali" (Trace), "Saholkho purtseli" (People's Leaflet), "Jedzhili" (Niva), "Nakaduli" (Spring), etc.

In 1896, with the support and financial assistance of Ilya Chavchavadze, Mose Toidze was enrolled in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in Ilya Repin's class. Along with his studies at the Academy, at Repin's invitation, Toidze worked in Repin's studio and supervised practical classes in painting. In his work "The Appearance of Christ", Repin used the face of Mose Toidze as a prototype of God.
