The art of Georgian toasts: Basic toasts and their meaning at a traditional feast

In all countries of the world, an integral part of any holiday is a feast, and in every house there is the tradition of making a toast. We congratulate the birthday people with a toast, wish each other happiness and success in the new year. There are a huge number of toasts on completely different topics in the world. And few of us know that toasting is an art. In many countries, the ability to say toasts is passed down from generation to generation.

Considering that our life is flowing and everything around us is changing, toasts are also changing. Some have become completely irrelevant, and some have been remade in a modern way.

Georgia has its own traditions and rules on how to properly say toasts. In addition to common reasons to say a toast when georgian wine you can only sip a little, there are a number of toasts in which you need to completely empty the glass. As a rule, the reason for this is patriotism and faith.

In Russia or, for example, France, it is customary to drink wine from glasses. In Georgia, wine can be poured into absolutely any dish. Sometimes Georgians like to solemnly pronounce a toast holding a khanzi in their hand, in a simple way — a horn.

In Georgia it is customary to make toasts according to seniority. Georgians pronounce them slowly, putting deep meaning and sincerity into them. Often the toast can be some legend, ballad, fable with an instructive ending. Such toasts can be heard from the older, wise generation, which once again gives instructions to the younger ones.

Georgian toasts about friendship

Friendship is highly valued in Georgia, and a truly rich person is someone who has a lot of friends. Every Georgian considers his friend a brother or sister, and treats him with respect and full trust. In Georgian, when addressing a male friend, the word "dzmakatsi" is used, which translates as "brother", and when addressing a female friend - "dakali", which means "sister".

During a pleasant meeting, when friends are sitting at the table, you can often hear such toasts:

"A beautiful girl lived in the mountains for a long time. Two handsome friends fell in love with her. One day one of the horsemen came to the beauty and confessed his love. To check on the groom, the girl sent him to the top of the mountain. The girl ordered the horseman to make a fire that would burn all night until morning.

If the horseman succeeds, then the girl will marry him. The young man rode away to the mountain. On the same day, another horseman came, who also confessed his feelings to the girl. To test him, the girl said that he had to extinguish the fire on the mountain.

The horseman galloped away. In the morning, the second young man reached the top of the mountain and saw a sleeping friend, and a dying fire nearby. The horseman could not let his friend down and threw firewood to ignite the fire. Let's drink to real men and true friendship."

"The Lord created a woman from Adam's rib, but if He had appointed her to be the mistress of a man, He would have created her from the head; if a slave, He would have created her from the leg; but since He appointed her to be a friend and equal to a man, He created her from the rib. So let's drink to the fact that one good thing comes from this rib, as from a true friend."

Georgian birthday toast

One of the large-scale holidays in Georgia, of course, is an anniversary or birthday. Relatives and friends are in a hurry to congratulate the birthday boy or the birthday girl on this solemn event. In toasts, guests talk about the most sincere wishes, give life advice. They sound beautiful, unhurried. Great importance is attached to a toast made by an elder or the head of the family. Here is one example of a beautiful, deeply meaningful toast: and

"Once the Lord gave a man 25 years of life. He believed that this was enough to live a good and fulfilling life. He measured out half a century for animals. The man considered it unfair and began to beg the animals to give him a part of their lives.

The horse, dog and monkey did not resist and gave part of their lives to man. Since that time, it has happened that a person lives a carefree life for the first 25 years of his life. He's been working for the next 25 years. For another 25 years, a person lives alone, like a homeless dog. For the last 25 years, human life can be compared to the life of a monkey. A person becomes old, and sometimes is a cause for laughter because of his infirmity."

Georgian toasts

Georgian toasts dedicated to women

You can talk about beauty, tenderness, kindness and many other qualities of women endlessly. Their sophistication and irresistibility inspires men to give them compliments. And how beautiful these compliments sound in Georgian toasts, where men once again prove how beautiful women are:

"One day a snake crawled up to Allah and asked him to get rid of its scales. She is tired of crawling, she wants to become a beautiful woman. You don't have to be a snake to sting people. Allah thought and turned the snake into a charming woman. A few days later, a snow-white dove flew to Allah and asked him to turn her into a woman. Allah went to meet the dove and she became a woman. Allah gave a parting word that she should do only good deeds. Since that time there have been two women – the good and the evil. Friends, let's raise our cups for the beautiful half of our planet — for kind women, who are more numerous on the whole globe than evil and with a black soul."

"One Georgian woman comes home and indignantly says to her husband:

– Valiko, can you imagine, our neighbor changed his wife for a thoroughbred horse! After all, you would never do that, dear?

– Well, what are you, – Valiko answers, – at least, for a foreign car and a bottle of old Georgian wine.

So let's drink to our beloved wives, who are more valuable than any thoroughbred horse, more beautiful than any foreign car and sweeter than any old wine!".

Wedding toasts

There are a huge number of toasts on this topic. At a wedding in Georgia, all relatives from both sides gather. And everyone wants to congratulate the young people on the creation of a new married couple.

In wedding toasts, they most often talk about how beautiful love is, that it has the power to protect the family from evil. Some guests include moral teachings in their toasts, perhaps experienced from personal experience:

"Three wanderers led the way along a mountain, steep road. The journey was long, they ate once in three days, the water ran out. Looking around, they did not see where to drink water. One of the wanderers noticed a beautiful tree among the huge rocks. The travelers were amazed, and could not believe that trees with fruits could grow next to the rocks. Suffering from thirst, the travelers reached the tree, but it turned out that three fruits were hanging on it.

The first traveler was already exhausted and very thirsty. He began to squeeze the juice out of an orange. But the orange had a very thick peel, so it didn't work out to squeeze the juice. The traveler could not quench his thirst. The second one began to eat an orange, but could not because of the bitter peel, which was a lump in his throat. The third traveler, although he was exhausted, peeled an orange from the peel. After eating it, the wanderer quenched his thirst and refreshed himself. Guests, let's raise our glasses to the fact that the married couple did not know discord and drank together the divine moisture of the fruits of their great love."

"There was one man in the world, but a disaster happened and he died. A person has been faithful to the Lord all his life. He did not want to die in any way and begged God to let him live some more. The Almighty has allowed man to continue his life. Before returning to earth, God handed the man three boxes with gifts and strictly ordered him not to look into them until he returned to his haven.

On the way home, the man could not stand it, opened one box, and joy flew out of it, fluttering with wings. In the next box he opened, there was love and she ran away without looking back. The man did not open the last box. Having reached the dwelling, having closed the windows and doors, the man opened the third box. There was hope in her, who stayed to live with a person and became an assistant in business. Let's drink to the fact that our young spouses do not lose joy, do not miss love and live their whole lives with hope."

"A young handsome Georgian man invited a girl to the cinema. Having settled down in the last rows, they began to kiss. An elderly woman was sitting nearby, who told the couple that it was impossible to make out in a public place. The guy replied that he would love to do it at home, but his wife is there. Let's raise our glasses so that real men kiss only their wives."

"Once at a celebration, the toastmaster decided to say a congratulatory toast. When he raised a glass of the best wine, he felt his stomach churn. To get out of the situation, the toastmaster decided that after the toast he would take out a gun, shoot loudly and at the same time free himself from anxiety. But everything went completely wrong. The toastmaster's gun misfired and the guests heard him fart.

The toastmaster was burning with shame, tell who and everyone will laugh. To avoid shame, he went to the mountains for 10 years. When he returns, he asks the boy if anything interesting has happened during his absence. The boy replied that after the toastmaster farted, nothing interesting happened. Let's drink to the fact that our thoughts never diverge from our deeds."

"Once, many, many years ago, a certain Kakha Kalmakhelidze led his flocks to the mountains. Once he had been tending his sheep for several weeks and suddenly he saw a wonderful flower on the mountainside. Kakha tore it off and attached it to his burka. When he returned home, a beautiful woman came out of the flower and said that she would be his wife and the mother of his children. I propose to drink to our dear birthday girl, who was probably also found by her husband in a wonderful flower!".

Funny Georgian toasts

To dilute the guests' toasts, which are deeply filled with meaning and wisdom, Georgians sometimes make jokes toasts. Although the atmosphere at the celebration already implies fun, a funny toast is an occasion to smile once again or laugh heartily:

"There was a guy Georgi and a girl Tamari, who fell in love with each other very much. Their love turned into a wedding. After the celebration, Georgi had to go to another city for work. Georgi told his wife not to worry and that he would arrive in three days.

Ten days passed, and Georgi did not come. Tamari's young wife was all worn out with worries. Tamari did not know where her husband had gone, and she sent telegrams to ten of his friends in different cities. We received reply telegrams from friends. All my friends wrote that they had Georgi and everything was fine with him. Let's drink to the faithful friends who will never leave in trouble."

Funny scenes

You have already seen the originality and versatile imagination of the Georgian people. Toasts here like to be pronounced not only standing with a glass in hand, but also in the form of moralizing and funny scenes in which several people participate at once. Everyone plays their own role, performing certain actions under the voice of the narrator. This is a very interesting and funny sight.

"Once upon a time there was a Georgian family in the world. The father is a blacksmith, the mother is a housewife and the son is lazy. The father worked, the mother did household chores, and the son ate, drank and rested. In his twenty years, his son did not earn a penny, he was too lazy. And so they lived, but now the father grew old. The old man feels that death is near and he called his son to him. He began to reprimand his son that he was a slacker and did not want to work.

The son resisted his father's words and replied that he would work without difficulty. The father said that if he earned at least a ruble, he would give the whole farm to his son as an inheritance. The son thought about it, because he was too lazy to go to work. Then the mother came to the rescue of her beloved son. She gave her son a ruble, sent him for a walk and told him, when he returned home in the evening, to say that he had earned the money. The father did not believe his son that he earned it and threw the ruble into the fire. The next day the same thing happened again. On the third day, the mother did not give her son money and sent him to earn himself. The guy worked hard for a whole week and earned a handful of coins.

I came home, barely able to stand on my feet from fatigue. The father again did not believe and threw the money into the fire, but the son could not resist and rushed to collect coins from the fire. He began to cry that he worked for a whole week without straightening his back, and his father did so. This time my father believed me and said that other people's money is cheap and it's not a pity, but his earned money is a pity. The father gave a parting word to his son: "If you work well, you will have money in your pocket."

In Georgia, everyone knows how to say beautiful toasts that flow like a stream from their mouths. Everyone knows at least a dozen by heart. There are never bored guests on Georgian holidays. After all, a sociable atmosphere is present at every event.
