The Zhinvali reservoir can be viewed during an excursion along the Georgian Military Road.
The tour along the Georgian military road to Kazbegi begins with an inspection of the Zhinvali reservoir - an emerald-colored lake of extraordinary beauty. Ananuri guard fortress is also located here
An excursion along the Georgian Military Road is able to fascinate absolutely everyone with its beauty. The first place we will visit as part of our excursion will be the Zhinvali reservoir, which is a source of drinking water for the whole of Tbilisi.
The area around the lake is planted with green trees, which are reflected on the surface of the water, giving it an emerald ebb. A watchtower is located above the reservoir Ananuri Fortress, which has been preserved to this day almost in its original form.
The stones of the fortress are silent witnesses of the bloody events that took place here during their centuries-old history. It was built in the Late Middle Ages and served as the northern outpost of the defense of Transcaucasia, protecting the road to Daryal Gorge. You can walk around the fortress and visit the temple inside the fortress courtyard.
The Aragvi Gorge stretches along the route, where two sister rivers flow, the White and Black Aragvi. Rushing down, each in its own channel, the rivers merge into a single whole. The interesting thing about this place is that for several tens of meters after the connection, the water flow remains two-colored. We will be able to observe this small natural miracle in the town of Pasaunari.
Further along the route we arrive in the city of Stepantsminda, located almost at the very foot of Mount Kazbegi. On one of the peaks there is a beautiful monastery of the Gergeti Trinity, built in the 15th century. By SUV we will drive up to the temple, from where you can enjoy the beauty of the monastery up close.
The exterior of the building is decorated with carvings and bas-reliefs in the form of the sun, crosses, vines, animals and other ornaments. We will also have a gorgeous view of the huge Kazbegi. Gergeti is undoubtedly a place of power and is considered one of the main shrines of the Georgian people, and it is also the only cross-domed temple in the Khevi region. Here is a valuable Orthodox relic, the Gergeti Icon of the Mother of God.
After visiting the shrine, we return to Stepantsmindu, where everyone can enjoy hot hinkals. Then we return to Tbilisi. The tour is all-season, however, the condition of the roads in the mountains and weather conditions should be taken into account. In winter, it is impossible to climb by car to the Gergeti temple, and not everyone can overcome this path on foot.
