Lovers of hiking trails will enjoy a walk through the Machakhela Nature Reserve - at the moment there are three of them developed. In addition to the natural attractions of Georgia - rare plants and trees (Colchian boxwood, chestnut, Colchian walnut, berry yew), on hiking routes in Adjara you can explore the cultural and historical monuments of Georgia of different eras.
Machakhela National Park It is located in Adjara, which is located in the municipality of Khelvachauri. It is located in the valley of the Machakhelistskali River, at an altitude of 300 – 350 m above sea level. Visitors can find the building of the park administration in the central part of the village of Ajaris Agmarti, denoting the "rise of Adjara" and located in the municipality of Khelvachauri.
The reserve was founded in 2012. The purpose of the foundation is to protect the biological diversity of organisms and landscapes of the territory, to protect the unique Colchian ecological system of the forest, as well as to ensure the safe existence of ecology and the prosperity of tourism in the wild.
The reserve is located in the vicinity of the Machakhela River. The territory is covered with forests. Chestnut, beech, and alder grow in them. Many rare and relict plants grow here. For example, Colchian boxwood, chestnut, Colchian walnut, berry yew, birch bark and many other species of plants.
If you don't know what view in Georgia, then on the territory of the Machakhela National Park, tourists can meet not only the rarest plants, but also historical and cultural monuments. These include bridges of different eras in the form of arches, stone fortresses, special rooms for making wine and marani.
Currently, there are three hiking routes integrated with automobile routes in the reserve.
1) Arkhangelsk path, the length of which is approximately 4 km. The length of the motorway for cars is 8 km. The route passes through the Machakhela Gorge, Colchian forests, beech and chestnut forests. Tourists are invited to climb the Archangel Mountain, which offers views of the confluence of the Chorokha River with the Black Sea, the mountains Batumi and Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo, to the settlements located below. We can say that from here the whole of Adjara is visible at a glance.
2) Kokoleti Trail. The route is located from the administrative center at a distance of 15 km. The ascent is proposed to be made on foot or by car. The highest level of the trail opens a view of several settlements located in upper Machakhela, which is now in the possession of Turkey.
3) The path of the split waterfalls. It originates in the village of Adjara rise. From the village of Kokoleti, the route winds down to the waterfall. There are two of them in the gorge. The surroundings are mixed, deciduous and coniferous forests and ravines. It is important to note that the Kokoleti path passes through the border strip. Therefore, five days before the start of this tour, you should inform the administration of the national park so that you will be given a pass.
