Church of St. George in Akhmeta

Ahmeta Church of St. George is a historical church located in the Uto district, near the market in the Ahmet municipality. Built in the late Middle Ages, the church has a hall measuring 7.8 x 5.5 m and contains two chronologically distinct building layers. The lower parts of the walls are made of cobblestones, while the upper parts are built of well-polished Shirim stone. Architectural elements such as door and window arches are made of brick.

The interior of the church is decorated with two layers of plaster from different periods. The main entrance, located on the west side, leads through an arched door set in a rectangular niche. To the east is a deep semicircular apse with a molded shell, the boundaries of which form a small step. In the northern part of the apse, at the level of the heel, there is a small cache. The sanctuary has one narrow arched window and two arched niches. In the middle of the sanctuary are the remains of a wooden table with preserved pillar supports.

The church is illuminated through narrow windows located in the longitudinal walls of the hall and in the western wall. The east facade is decorated with a window top consisting of three recessed semicircular arches painted dark red. On the western facade there is a relief in the form of an equilateral cross in a circle, also covered with dark red paint.

On the territory of the church there is a three-tiered brick garden covered with corrugated tiles. The Church of St. George in Akhmeta is of significant interest to lovers of history and architecture, as well as those interested in the religious heritage of the region.
