We rented a 4x4 Ford Escape to explore off-road, but we didn't venture onto rough terrain due to warning lights for the gearbox, ABS, and brake system. The red brake warning light was particularly concerning, but the owner reassured us it was "OK". Overall, the vehicle didn't appear to be well-maintained mechanically.
