Wunderschöne Kirche, definitiv einen Besuch wert! Von außen eher schlicht, aber innen gibt es beeindruckende Fresken zu sehen… zumindest das, was noch davon übrig ist. Auch der Kronleuchter ist beeindruckend. Wenn die Kirche verschlossen ist, kann man den Schlüssel beim Küster im darunterliegenden Haus bekommen.

ზაფხულის ტბილს დღეში სიონის მეტეხი საოცარი სიმშვიდით და სიძველის სურნელით ამავსებს, როდესაც ძველი ფრესკების წინ ვდგექი.

მშვენიერი გამოცდილება იყო, როდესაც ატენის სიონში ვიმყოფებოდი, სიწმინდე და სიმშვიდე ისე შეიგრძნობოდა, თითქოს დრო გაჩერდა.

Nestled in a stunning gorge, the serenity and timeless aura of this cathedral are unforgettable. Our walk there was an adventure through history, encountering ancient fortresses and towers. The paved road that runs to the site is convenient, but the journey on foot is soul-refreshing, much like the destination itself.

Кажется, это место идеально для фото на расстоянии, но стоит подойти ближе, и вся магия исчезает. Окружена строительными лесами и мусором, эта святыня теряет своё очарование. Люди оставили свои следы в виде нацарапанных на стенах "шедевров", словно здесь царит заброшенный дух. Вместо внутреннего уюта — такие же леса. Честно говоря, оставляет больше вопросов, чем ответов.

Есть места, где время будто замирает, и ты погружаешься в прошлое. Но впечатление немного омрачает запустение вокруг. Архитектура всё ещё восхищает, но, кажется, ей не хватает заботы. It's worth the detour.

The architectural design is closely related to that of the Mtskheta Djvari Monastery. Historically, this place served as a treasury for the Georgian kings, where they kept their riches. It was once a thriving city, unlike the current village of Ateni. Unfortunately, by the late 17th century, it suffered due to slave trade activities involving Dagestan and Turkey. The situation improved when Knight Eristavi of Aragvi, with approval from Russian Emperor Alexander I, liberated it from foreign slave traders, allowing the local people to return to the Ateni Gorge. Nowadays, it seems to be mostly inaccessible. Despite visiting multiple times, it's always been closed, which continues to surprise me. Nevertheless, this is where you can find a unique depiction of David IV the Builder, one of Georgia's most revered kings, captured in his youth.

The frescos are breathtaking. If you find the church closed, just speak to the guard in the nearby house, and he’ll open it for you.

It's often tricky to get to places like this, but not here; there's a tidy parking area close by and an easy path leading straight to the church. The surrounding views are breathtaking.

Одно из самых впечатляющих мест в Грузии. Захватывают фрески, потрясает архитектура, и само расположение впечатляет. Все это стоит увидеть.

This place is a hidden treasure. Inside, you'll find frescoes from the 7th, 9th, and 11th centuries that are truly one-of-a-kind. The great Abramishvili found inspiration here and began his short walk to the top. It's incredibly peaceful with no tourists around; you'll likely have the place to yourself. A friendly lady on staff is eager to share information with you. A car is necessary, and it's about an hour and a half drive from Tbilisi, but the road conditions are excellent.

Amazing!

This church dates back to the 7th century. Despite having endured fire and various adversities, you can still admire the ancient frescoes inside.

When you find yourself in Gori, make sure to set aside 30 minutes to see this place.

The church is a remarkable example of religious architecture in Georgia, showcasing various historical periods, even dating back to the 2nd-1st century BCE. It's an incredibly fascinating spot, with over 16,000 inscriptions in multiple languages etched onto the stones. If there's a place that embodies the history of Georgia, this would be it. A small piece of advice—there's an excellent local guide available, and using his services will greatly enrich your experience and understanding of this site.

Этот собор — просто произведение архитектурного искусства, расположен в удивительно красивом ущелье. Определённо стоит посещения, впечатления самые положительные. Отмечу, что туда ведёт асфальтированная дорога, но мы предпочли идти пешком и нисколько не пожалели. На пути попались крепости, башни и различные средневековые сооружения.

I highly recommend a visit. The entire church is beautiful, showcasing impressive medieval architecture. Inside, some remnants of frescoes have been preserved. Nearby, there are a couple of charming, lesser-known wineries. Close by, an intermediate hiking trail through the surrounding hills begins.

Currently undergoing renovation (January 2023), I enjoyed noticing the small details. The view is breathtaking!

A lovely journey from Gori, though you can hop on a marshrutka or take a taxi if you're pressed for time. There were workers at the church and on the grounds, but someone let me in and turned on the lights. The frescoes aren't in perfect condition, but they have their own unique appeal. Definitely worth seeing in my view. Entry is free. Open from 08:00 to 18:00. Remember to follow the standard dress code for churches.
