What are the rules when choosing wine in Georgia?
Ivan.
Ekaterina.
I know from my own experience that fakes are found everywhere, perhaps in highly developed countries too. To be honest, alcoholic fakes are also found in Georgia.
The rules for choosing wine are as follows:
1) Wine should not be cheap! Think about it when you see a bottle of natural, according to the seller, Georgian wine for 10 lari! In my opinion, when wine is sold for 7-10 bucks – it does not need to be purchased, apparently, it is of poor quality!
2) Unfortunately, semi-sweet is often faked than dry. Due to the astringency of dry wine, it is difficult to fake it – the taste will be immediately felt. With semi-sweet, alas, it is more difficult. Therefore, when buying, read the sticker-label very carefully, often you can find all the necessary information there to detect a fake.
Look: if you read on a bottle of amazing Khvanchkar wine that it was made from the same grape variety, then this wine is fake! The real Khvanchkara wine is made from Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli varieties! Be careful!
There are many shops in Georgia that work directly with wineries – buy wine there! Here is my main advice for you.
Valeria.
Yes, there are many wine companies in Georgia (several hundred for sure!) both public and private, while homemade wine is sold everywhere on tap.
When you are in Tbilisi, go to Leselidze (this is such a street in the Old Town), find specialty stores where you can taste different types of wine, choose the one that you like the most.
This way you will definitely avoid counterfeiting, after trying it you will understand what you are buying. And the most wonderful option is to go on a tour to the winery! Believe me, there are many of them!
This is both interesting and useful: you will learn how wine is produced, try different types of alcohol, in addition to wine, chacha, for example. And then you can buy your favorite drinks in the shop right at the factory.
I recommend it!
Vinnik.
Everyone is so confused! A nightmare! When I was in Georgia, I didn't worry for a second that I could buy low-quality wine!
I went twice to wineries and visited small villages in shops and bought homemade wine from my grandmother, the hostess of the hostel – all the wine is excellent! I have never come across a diluted or some kind of low–quality. In any very simple supermarket, the wine is wonderful!
Don't listen to those who are afraid of fakes! They act out of considerations of some of their negative experience in other European countries, having burned themselves on milk, they blow on water.
Cassandra.
Here are my rules when choosing wine in Georgia:
- We look carefully at the bottle: the label is pasted exactly, there are no spread stamps or other blurred information.
- Google from which grape variety the wine is made, the bottle of which you are holding in your hands, as someone wrote a little higher: if the inscription "Khvanchkara" is on the bottle, then we read on the label: "grape variety Mujuretuli and Alexandrouli". And if it says "grade: khvanchkara" – do not take it! This is an obvious fake!
- Bottle shape: look at the bottom! To distinguish a quality drink from a fake, conscientious producers pour wine into bottles with a conical bottom, so you can immediately see the real wine: there is no sediment in it.
- In order not to be afraid of fakes, just be careful, take your time, read the labels, talk to sellers, consult. A fake with due attention can be distinguished even by an untrained eye!
- Be careful when choosing wine! I do not have clear rules that guide me when choosing wine in Georgia. But there are general recommendations: check labels, stamps and other signs that guarantee that the products are of high quality. Be sure, if you are not in a hurry, of course, taste the wine before buying. Wine from Georgia is the most gorgeous gift to relatives and friends! Pamper your loved ones: bring them a bottle and, of course, do not forget about yourself!
- I've been to Georgia many times already and I don't think I've come across any fakes yet. But I probably wouldn't risk buying wine right at the bazaar. My rule when choosing wine in Georgia: go to the Wine Gallery! The store is located near the Agmashenebeli Ave. This is a great store! The sellers are polite, friendly: they will give you a taste of wine, they will tell you everything, they will advise you! When I go there, I don't worry about fakes! What I recommend to you!
