The monastery complex of Timotesubani (Kimotesubani) is located in Borjomi district, three kilometers from the resort of Tsagveri, on the right bank of the Gujaretistskali River, in the depths of the valley.
The main building of the complex, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was built at the turn of the XII-XIII centuries on the ruins of an ancient monastery by the ruler of the historical region of Tori-Shalva Akhaltsikheli. There are suggestions that Shalvv Akhaltsikheli is buried here, in the north-eastern part of the main temple, in an arched stone crypt. The monastery complex is located terraced on the mountainside, covered with forests. In addition to the central temple, the complex includes the Church of St. Barbara (XI century), an arched brick building, which is the second entrance to the monastery, a refectory and other monastic buildings.
The cathedral is a central domed structure and has a cruciform shape according to the plan. A special feature of the temple are the three extended apses of the altar and the pastophoria. The portals were added later. They are constructed of different building materials: the eastern portal is made of brick, and the southern one is made of hewn stone.
The facades of the temple are completely devoid of decorative elements, as well as other brick temples in Georgia. A certain artistic impression is created here by the color scheme - the facade is lined with pink bricks, between which layers of mortar pass. The effect is also created by turquoise ceramic inserts on the dome drum, which shine like precious stones from afar. At the bottom of the drum, the same round discs are inserted like a necklace. The Timotesuban monastery complex is famous for its frescoes. The murals that cover all the walls of the interior were made no later than the 20s of the XIII century and are among the brilliant monuments of the era of Queen Tamara.
