Unique places in Georgia. Visit beautiful natural places. Katskhi Pillar.
Do you want to find an interesting and unique place in Georgia? Then visit the Katskhi Pillar, which is listed in the Red Book. This limestone monolith is very interesting due to its shape and height, which reaches forty meters. The lower part of the pillar has been eroded, so the top is much wider, giving the monolith an even more interesting appearance.
Near the pillar is the Katskhi Church. The temple was built in the 10th-11th centuries. It belonged to the noble feudal clan of Bagvashi and served as a burial place for the representatives of this family. Liparit Lipartisdze (died in 1064) is buried here.
The village of Katskhi is located in Zemo Imereti (Chiatura municipality) and is distinguished by its beauty and rich historical past. The name of the village comes from the Svan word "Katskhi", which means "peak" and is related to the natural limestone pillar that stands on the territory of the village. The pillar is a limestone monolith that formed as a result of tectonic shifts. In the language of geologists, it is a sedimentary "witness" of denudation processes. It is listed in the Red Book as a unique natural monument. Denudation is the process of erosion and transport of weathering products of rocks under the influence of rain and wind. Some natural forms formed as a result of denudation have such perfect structure that they seem to be the work of human hands. This is exactly what the Katskhi Pillar is.
The pillar is about 40 meters high, and the area of its upper rectangular part is about 150 square meters. It is mostly elongated upwards, although in some places its upper part has several terraces. The lower part has been eroded by the lime layers, so the base of the pillar is narrower than its upper part. There is a small church on the top platform of the pillar.
