Significant lakes in Georgia. Unusual lake Paliastomi.
Lake Paliastomi is interesting because a sharp increase in salinity, due to the infusion of seawater, it increased tenfold, killed all freshwater fish in it, because of this, only a few dozen species of fish live in the lake. In the regions, this lake is of great recreational importance.
Lake Paliastomi It is located in Western Georgia, in the coastal strip of the Black Sea, in the Colchis lowland, near the city of Poti. In terms of its area (18.2 km2), Paliastomi ranks third among the lakes of Georgia.
The name of the lake comes from the Greek word and literally means "old shore" or "old mouth". This ancient Black Sea bay, which turned into a lake, in the historical past was finally separated from the sea by a coastal bottom strip 2 kilometers wide.
Three rivers flow into the lake, and one Kaparchina River flows out. The amplitude of the water temperature is 20 degrees, although the lake does not freeze. At different times of the year, the lake is characterized by both strong excitement and a strong decrease in the water level. This is due to strong winds: seawater reaches the lake through a specially conducted channel (currently a strait). The width of the strait connecting the lake with the Black Sea is 150 meters. Due to the infusion of seawater, the salinity of the lake increased 10 times.
A sharp increase in salinity quickly destroyed the freshwater fish living here. And some fish species that were associated with the sea have preserved their natural environment. It is known that at the beginning of the last century, catfish and pike, which have now completely disappeared, were found in large numbers here. Today, several dozen species of fish live in the lake, among which carp and mullet are commercial.
Lake Paliastomi is the main objectColchis National Park. It is of great recreational importance in the region.

А ещё Палиастоми не обычное озеро, а соленое. Очередной интересный факт.
