Ancient places in Tbilisi. Georgian sights. Metekh fortress and Narikala.
Metekhi is the very first settlement. At one time, this fortress was of great importance for the country. Now the fortress is practically not preserved, but you definitely need to come to it to touch the history. Narikala is the main fortress of Tbilisi. This fortress has been preserved better, it offers a beautiful view of the expanses of the city.
Metekhi - the very first settlement is located in Avlabar, on the left bank of the Kura River, on a rocky hill. It includes the Isan fortress and the territory adjacent to it. Once this fortress was a royal residence, hence the name of this settlement: "Metekhi" in the ancient Georgian language means "the territory surrounding the palace".
Metekhi was a district of artisans and merchants. In the center of it was the Church of the Holy Virgin, which was originally built by Vakhtang Gorgasali in the V century. According to legend, the heavenly patron saint of Tbilisi, Saint Abo Tbileli, was executed at the foot of the Metekhi rock (in 786), currently there is a church named after him.
In 1235, the Mongols destroyed the royal palace and the court church located in Metekhi. In 1278-1289, the King of Georgia Demeter II restored the church in its present form. Currently, Metekhi is a church of a central domed structure and repeats the design of the old churches. In the XVII century, the "vali" (manager) of Kartli surrounded Metekhi with a fence. In the XVII-XVIII centuries the church underwent many changes. Here was the camp of the Persian and Ottoman troops. During the period of Russian rule (since 1801), the church turned into a military barrack. And since 1891, additional buildings have been added to the Meheti, performing the functions of dungeons. In the 30s of the twentieth century, the buildings around the building were demolished, and the territory was cleared. The Bolsheviks wanted to destroy the church altogether, but, having encountered resistance from the advanced part of the Georgian intelligentsia, they refused to implement this vandal plan. A monument to the founder of the city Vakhtang Gorgasali (sculptor E. Amashukeli) was erected in front of the church in 1967. Since 1988, the Metekhi Church has become operational again.
Narikala is the historical citadel of Tbilisi, the main fortress structure. In Georgian sources, it is referred to as the "mother fortress". In the XVII century. the fortress was named "Narikala" (from Persian). Numerous traces of reconstructions of the IV-XVIII centuries are visible on it. The last reconstruction of the fortress was carried out in 2000. The Church of St. Nicholas was restored. Nicholas and the fortress fence. Beautiful views of old and new Tbilisi open from Narikala.
