Georgia is a country of winemaking. Scientists have proved that the foundations of viticulture and winemaking in Georgia were laid in the Early Bronze Age, more than 8000 years ago. For thousands of years, a unique culture of wine production has been formed on the territory of the country. Part of this culture is the tradition of making wine in kvevri (a large wine jug buried in the ground) in the presence of wine microzones: Tsinandali, Teliani, Napareuli, Vazisubani, Mukuzani, Akhasheni, Gurjaani, Kardenahi, Tibaani, Kindzmarauli, Mavani, Eniseli, Gremi. The wines made from the fruits of the vine grown in these microzones have specific taste qualities characteristic of these places.
In the first half of the XIX century, the famous Georgian poet and public figure Alexander Chavchavadze in Tsinandali, along with a magnificent palace (an outsider in the early 20s of the XIX century, designed by architect A.Ozerov) founded a winery, vodka production enterprises and a huge underground wine cellar - Marani. He also created the first enoteca in Georgia, which still houses the Chavchavadze wine collection. The collection contains 16,500 bottles of both Georgian and European wines of about 70 brands. The oldest exhibit in the collection is Polish mead from 1814, and from Georgian wines - "Saperavi" from 1841. At exhibitions held at different times, this collection was awarded 11 gold medals. Today, the Alexander Chavchavadze House-museum is located in the Tsinandali Palace. There are about 20,000 exhibits that relate to his life and work, and also displays the realities of that time - an epistolary archive, samples of iconography, various book publications, manuscripts and photographs of the XIX century, furniture, etc. All visitors to the museum have the opportunity to taste the wine made in the estate of Chavchavadze.
