The painting of the cathedral is considered one of the best examples of Georgian medieval monumental painting, dating from the II half of the XI century, although later layers have been discovered.
On the walls of the Athenian Zion, along with frescoes, unique inscriptions and postscript of different times in the ancient Georgian alphabet "Asomtavruli" have been preserved, which mention historical figures and events, contain dates.
From the outside, the cathedral is decorated with numerous reliefs. The eastern and southern sides of the facade are particularly different.
