Embark on a journey through the most beautiful ceremonial Tbilisi⬇️

content

Special attention was paid to the design of the main entrance to the house in the 18th and 19th centuries: beautiful stairs, stucco and all kinds of architectural decorations, wall paintings, etc. After all, such an entrance was used to meet guests, sometimes the hosts wanted to stun the guests, make a good impression. The entrance was the main one, really the front one. And for household affairs there was a "black" entrance, it was used by the servants.

They often talk about the beauty of the front doors in the houses of St. Petersburg, the word itself is most often associated with St. Petersburg.

In Tbilisi in the 19th century — the beginning of the 20th, luxury houses were built, often Italian masters were engaged in their interior paintings. The main difference from the St. Petersburg ones is that light wells are often found in Georgian entrances.

That is, the windows in the ceiling, which illuminate the space, because gas lighting was used only in 1910. There are legends about the parade of the Georgian capital. Unfortunately, in the 20th century, paintings on the walls were often painted over with ordinary oil paint — purely and functionally, so many paintings are lost. But some things have been preserved, and sometimes wall paintings are revived in the process of restoration and repair.

Now there are about 150 houses in the city that attract tourists. Many are monuments of architecture and art of Georgia. They are located mainly in the Old Town and the Sololaki district. Walking along them will take 3-4 hours, and maybe the whole day.

House of Writers 1905

The project of the house was prepared by K. Tsaar, an architect from Berlin, there are elements of Baroque in the design. A house was being built for the scientist and entrepreneur David Saradzhishvili. The owners arranged exhibitions, concerts, parties, meetings with artists in the house.

After the death of David Zakharievich (1911), the house was handed over to the local authorities. There was one condition — everything should be preserved, the house should house an institution related to art — a museum or an art gallery.

In 1912, Akaky Khoshtariya became the owner of the house. Nicholas II visited here in 1914 at a meeting with the noble society of Tbilisi.

After the onset of Soviet power, A. Khoshtaria left Georgia. The building was handed over to the creative intelligentsia of Georgia. Thus began the history of the Writers' House. Many famous writers visited it: Mikhail Bulgakov, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Maxim Gorky, O. Mandelstam, S. Yesenin, etc.

In 1937, a tragic incident happened — on July 22, right at a meeting of members of the Georgian Writers' Union, when "political vigilance" was discussed, the poet Paolo Yashvili shot himself, at a meeting discussed

Shortly before that, the poet's friends Nikolo Mitzishvili and Titian Tabidze were arrested and shot, and he himself was expecting arrest. Ironically, Paolo used a weapon given to him by T. Tabidze. The Writers' House fulfills its function to this day, literary meetings are held in the house. The decoration has also been preserved: painting on the ceiling, a large fireplace, chandeliers.

Café Littera is located in the courtyard of the house. Visitors note that there is a very delicious coffee and desserts. It is said that the floor tiles at the exit to the garden are from the same issue that was used during the construction of the infamous Titanic.

Not far from the Writers' House, on Machabeli Street, 17, there is a mansion of merchant Mikhail Kalantarov. It is considered one of the most beautiful in Tbilisi, built in neo-Moorish style according to the plan of architect Sarksian. The house is practically a copy of the metropolitan Opera and Ballet Theater.

There were also legends. According to one of them, Kalantarov fell in love with a singer, an actress of the opera theater. She was not only beautiful and capricious. In response to the marriage proposal, the lady said she would get married when Mikhail built a house for her, similar to the theater building.

And so it happened: a house was built, a wedding was played. There were six children in the family. A cypress tree was planted in the courtyard in honor of each of them. Nowadays there are only two trees left, others were cut down when work was carried out to strengthen the house next to the merchant's mansion.

According to another legend, State Security Commissioner Lavrenty Beria lived in Kalantarov's house. But this is not so, his niece lived here. Lavrenty often came to visit her. Now it is an ordinary residential building, but very beautiful. The marble railing on the stairs, lace stucco, ceiling light, fireplace and antique mirror have been preserved.

There are two front doors in the house. The most attractive one is from Machabeli Street, the door is locked, but it is often open. Residents are accustomed to the "raids" of tourists, they are quite tolerant of them. On the lower floor there is an art club under the "picturesque" name "Pirosmani". Go to the club, and at the same time inspect the front door.

And there are apartments for rent in the house (Kuxos Machabeli 1 Studio). Living here, you will be able to see the house in all its details. There is a second front door from Asatiani Street. Usually it is closed, you can enter with one of the tenants. The garden with cypresses on the back side is surrounded by a wrought-iron fence, in which there is a gate. During the day it is open, you can go in and look around.

The Seylanovs' House

The Seylanovs' House

It was built in 1922 according to the project of G. Sargsyan. The owners of the house — six brothers, owners of the tobacco factory of Tiflis, lived here, besides him they also had profitable houses.

The oil painting on the walls of the first floor was done by theater artist Benedict Telingater. Each painting is an allegorical representation of a certain continent or country. One shows Asian motifs, the other — Notre Dame de Paris. There is Russia, Africa, America.

In the staircases there are pre—revolutionary era wallpaper, they are also on the upper floors of the building. The mosaic floor was decorated by masters from the famous Andreoletti company in Tbilisi, the name of the owners is read at the entrance.

There are several companies in the house, you can go there if suddenly the door turns out to be closed. In 2019, the restoration was carried out. Address: Tabidze str., 18.

Madame Bozardjants' house, as the townspeople call it. The Bozardjian family mansion was very beautiful. Built according to the project of Mikhail Agadzhanov in 1912-1914, already in 1915 the house earned the prize of the competition "The best facade of the Year". Industrialist Nikolai Bozardjants had a tobacco factory in Tbilisi that produced "Sympathy" cigarettes. Hoping to preserve the property in the difficult years of the early 20th century, the house was issued to his wife — Ekaterina Grigorievna,

But all the property was nationalized with the advent of Soviet power. Cigarettes began to be called "Prima". And the party elite moved into the house, the former owners were left with only two rooms. The house still does not leave anyone indifferent, it can be seen in the movie "Seventeen Moments of Spring", one of the scenes was filmed nearby. In front of the house there is a cozy garden, fenced with a lace cast—iron fence. A large arch leads to the courtyard.

The door is usually locked, you can only enter with one of the tenants of the house. The walls of the entrance hall are tiled, a marble staircase leads to the upper floors. The stained glass ceiling and Venetian glass in the entrance doors of the apartments have been preserved. In one of the apartments, you can still see the old tiled floor.

The house of tobacco manufacturer Nikolai Bozardjyants surprises the guests of Tbilisi with a rich decoration of the exterior facade in an eclectic style. The architect of the project was Mikhail Agadzhanov, on whose initiative stained glass windows for the ceiling and partitions were made in the Venetian workshops.

The front room of the mansion is worth visiting for the sake of French oak parquet, marble stairs, as well as plaster decorations and hand-painted ceramic tiles.

Hotel "London"

If you are not tired yet, we continue the "walk" around Tbilisi. Let's go in the other direction from Freedom Square, closer to the river and further to the left bank of the Kura.

On Atoneli Street, consider the building in which the London Hotel was located. It was built in the second half of the 19th century, a special rarity at that time — the hotel had electricity.

Copies of works by Italian artists of the 18th century were used as decorations. Among them is the painting "The Market Square in Pirna" by Bernardo Bellotto, painted in 1753-1755. The hotel was the most famous in Tbilisi, as they would say now — prestigious. Among its guests are P.I. Tchaikovsky, Knut Hamsun, Mikhail Ostrovsky — the brother of the Russian playwright A.N. Ostrovsky. During the First World War, a military hospital was established in the hotel. Over the years, the building gradually lost its prestige and gloss, it housed various organizations and institutions.

1925 — the Central Peasant's House is located in the building.

1950 — Tbilisi police department.

Since 1960, the famous hotel has become an ordinary residential building.

The general condition of the building leaves much to be desired, but some of the paintings have been preserved. The place deserves the attention of a curious tourist and it's worth hurrying there. The building is included in the city's restoration plan, and it is not yet known what and how it will look after large-scale repairs.

Address: Atoneli str., 31.

And in the neighboring building, No. 29, a very tasty ice cream is sold

Let's move on. The next stop is the Cable Car pavilion in the courtyard of house 52 on Rustaveli Avenue. This is the lower station of the cable car to Mtatsminda. It is closed and almost abandoned, it is not easy to find without a hint. The five-storey pavilion building was "lost" in a small courtyard, surrounded by residential buildings, near the metro station named after Sh. Rustaveli.

It has ceased to be used for its intended purpose since 1990. Then, on Children's Day, June 1, a tragedy occurred — a cable broke, trailers with children fell down. 20 people were killed, another 45 were seriously injured and injured. Since then, the cable car has been closed. And a funicular was launched on Mtatsminda Mountain.

The building is very interesting and unusual. To separate the flows of ascending and descending passengers, two ramps have been built along the walls that do not connect to each other.

Now visiting the building is prohibited, it is closed. But those who are interested always find workarounds. So it is here — there is a small loophole to the left of the entrance. Through it, the most curious tourists–photographers, and local teenagers, too, get into the pavilion.

House with a lantern and a view of the Kura

We move to the other side of the river.

It was built in 1885 by order of merchant I. Rotinov for his wife Ekaterina. The project was prepared by Alexander Shinkevich. Forged stairs and a real lantern on the third floor attract attention here.

The Moorish architectural style can be clearly traced in the exterior. From the cozy balconies, where the windows look like keyholes, there is a beautiful view of the embankment of Tbilisi. Before entering the front door, you can see a sign indicating the name of the owner of the mansion.

Erast Chavchanidze 's House

Agmashenebeli Avenue in the middle of the 19th century was called Mikhailovsky. This is one of the main streets in the capital of Georgia, there are many beautiful old mansions on it. In the old days it was also called the house with an eagle, because its facade was decorated with a bronze figure of an eagle. For a long time it was believed that it was lost or destroyed. But during the restoration it was found in the attic.

The ceiling in the front room is painted with patterns with angels. The walls of the third and second floors depict scenes from the epic poem by Sh. Rustaveli "Knight in Tiger skin".

The owner, Erast Chavchanidze, came from a poor family. In early childhood, the boy's parents brought him to Tiflis to learn a craft. He worked as a street cleaner, in a bakery. Later — in a haberdashery store, the owner of which was a German colonist. It was he who took an active part in the fate of the boy, sent him to Germany for education.

Erast has dreamed of building a house since childhood. After returning to Tbilisi, he took out a loan from a bank, and construction began. It lasted for a long time, about 30 years, and ended in 1903. It was an apartment building, and on the ground floor there was a trading shop "Luxembourg Enfant", where wine was sold.

Fate was not very favorable to Erast: his wife died, he lost his business and house. Ironically, the house was confiscated a few days after the last installment on the loan for the construction of the house was made to the bank. It happened in 1927. The contrived reason for the confiscation was the inability to maintain and take care of real estate. The family was left with only one room, where the former owner and his sons lived.

Now the house belongs to the daughter of Erast's eldest son, Mikhail — Tamara Chavchanidze. All the rooms in the house were bought by her son. The house has been restored. During the renovation, an old inscription with the name of the shop was found above the entrance, and a bronze eagle was found in the attic.

Walking further along Agmashenebeli Avenue, you should turn onto Tsinamdzgvrishvili Street and see the beautiful diamond-shaped staircase at No. 49. It is often found in photographs and postcards depicting the districts of Tbilisi.

And again we return to the avenue, we have two interesting objects ahead of us.
