Just twenty kilometers from Tbilisi, at the confluence of two rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi is the ancient capital of Georgia – the city of Mtskheta. It received the title of the administrative center of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti district. The city even has a resident – His Holiness Catholicos – Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II. How to get there?
The nearest route to Mtskheta passes through Tbilisi. With transfers, you can get to Didube station by bus or metro. From there, buses depart to Mtskheta every 15 minutes according to the schedule of 7:30-20:30.
Architecture
The architecture of the city of Mtskheta consists mainly of buildings erected in the period from the VI to the XI century. It is believed that it fully reflects the genius and sophistication of the Caucasian architecture of the Middle Ages and indicates the high development of culture in Georgia.
Jvari Monastery Temple, Built between 605 and 642, it is considered one of the oldest buildings in Georgia. The temple is located on the top of the Jvari mountain, after which it got its name. The view of the temple is magnificent. The shape of the temple is similar to the shape of a cross inscribed in a square base and topped with a dome on an octagonal drum. The Jvari temple is perfectly combined with the green decoration of the trees.
In addition to the Jvari Temple, several other religious centers are located and accessible to visitors on the territory of Mtskheta. Among them are the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the Samtavro Monastery, the Antiochian Church.
Archaeological excavations of Mtskheta
Few people know, but the ruined city of Armazi is located opposite Mtskheta. Unique finds, including ruins of the Bronze and Iron Age, gold and silver jewelry. In addition to these treasures, human burials of the Middle Ages and funerary traditions were found and studied by archaeologists.
Tracing the history of Rome and Georgia, you can find out that in 65, during the expedition of Gnaeus Pompey to Transcaucasia, the Romans rebuilt the long stone Pompey bridge over the Kura River. The bridge was reliable and strong until the time when hydroelectric power stations began to be built in the 20th century. The water level began to rise, and the bridge collapsed.

С орлиной высоты, вид на город Мцхету, что основан на слиянии рек Мтквари и Арагви, просто завораживает. От красных черепичных крыш веет какой-то умиротворенностью, а великолепный храмы, как рыцари в остроконечных шлемах высятся среди них. И всё это на склоне гор уводящих, зовущих вдаль. Очень красивое фото, очень красивое место.
С интересом узнала, что именно сюда пришла грузинская святая, известнейшая во всём православном мире -- равноапостольная Нина и об этом месте было ей чудесное видение "...место это будет обращено тобой в духовный сад, который будет приносить Божественные плоды вовеки" (из жития Св. Нины).
Как-то забылось уже со школы, что до сюда простиралась Римская империя и с того времени есть свидетельства, каменный мост, который существовал до середины прошлого века, до строительства гидроэлектростанций. Умели же строить, на века, как говорится!
