The walls of Dzhvari monastery are decorated with frescoes depicting not only saints, but also historical figures of Georgia.
One of the most beautiful places in Georgia is the ancient monastery, the monastery of Jvari, built in the 6th century.
The sights of Georgia are very diverse and scattered throughout the country, but some of them are worth visiting no matter what, as these are the most beautiful places in Georgia, at least due to their age and cultural value.
Jvari Monastery is a church and monastery of the 6th century, which is located east of the city of Mtskheta.
It is not surprising that this place was once chosen for construction, as the views are impressive in their beauty: here is the confluence of two rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi, which can be seen at a glance from the top of a rocky mountain. By the way, it is worth noting that the monastery of Jvari is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which once again underlines the value of the place.
The temple did not appear here immediately.
It all started with the fact that the ruler of Mirian converted to Christianity, in honor of which he decided to erect a huge wooden cross. Not only Georgians, but also other Christian peoples of the Caucasus came here to worship and pray.
A little later, this place attracted the attention of Guaram, who was at the head of Kartli (one of the main historical and geographical regions of Georgia, was considered the cradle of statehood). And Guaram built a small temple nearby with a cross. They call it the "Small Cross".
A little more time passed, and at the end of the 6th - beginning of the 7th century, the son of Guaram, Stephen I, built a large church near the temple erected by his father. A modern cross is kept here.
The monastery of Jvari is unusual in its architectural style for that time. It is considered the first example of a cruciform church, which reflects a new period in architecture.
By the way, not only religious, but also significant historical figures are depicted on the walls of the monastery. In some places, if you look closely, even ancient inscriptions have been preserved.
There are other buildings around the main church, such as towers, fences. They already belong to later buildings.
There is also another shrine here - the spring of St. Nino.
To get to it, you need to go down from the south side along a narrow path. It will lead to the fence of the source.
We hope that we have added to your list of things to see in Georgia. Come and enjoy the local flavor.
