Historic Georgian cities. City of May and Roses - Kutaisi. Monuments and the most beautiful places of the most ancient city of Georgia.
In the blog "MadLoba" you will find all the necessary information about Kutaisi: photos of attractions, historical information about the city, features of culture and architecture, where to go. It is better to come to Kutaisi in May, when the gardens are in bloom and millions of roses are blooming all over the city
On both banks of the Rioni River lies the ancient city of Kutaisi, one of the main cities of Georgia, the capital of Imereti. Kutaisi has the status of one of the most important cultural and historical centers of the country and plays an important role in the economy of Georgia.
In documentary sources the first mention of Kutaisi occurs in the 3rd century B.C. A trustworthy source is "Argonautica," by Apollonius of Rhodes, the famous poet and grammarian. Thus, we can say that Kutaisi is one of the few places in the world where the air is literally saturated with antiquity.
The city is conventionally divided into old and new. The border runs along the River Rione, on the left bank which is located, predominantly modern buildings. Numerous bridges connect the two parts of the city.
One of the iconic architectural and historical monuments located in Kutaisi is the Temple of Bagrat, built at the turn of the 10th-11th centuries. It was in Bagrat's temple that David IV the Builder, a highly respected Georgian king of the Bagration dynasty, was crowned. The structure is in its present form, after a serious restoration, which has been underway since 2010. The original building was seriously damaged in the 17-18 centuries during the war.
The legendary cave, where, according to legend, Prometheus was chained, is located near Kutaisi. However, we should say at once: the Prometheus "cave" is not some "medium-sized" room. Only the 10th part of the underground natural structure is accessible to visitors. Moreover, the walk will take more than an hour. Well, the cave itself, if you believe more experienced travelers, is a kind of underground cave town - there are rivers, streams and even lakes.
Incredibly beautiful Colchis Fountain is an architectural structure of modern construction. The composition, the crown of which are copies of statues of golden horses of King Eet, a total of 30 figures. The fountain itself is lined with Kharagul stone, and the copies of the statues were made from the original Bronze Age figures found in the Colchis Depression.
It is enough to visit Kutaisi once. In order to want to come back here again and again.
