The sights of Georgia will delight guests with their diversity – they can be cultural, historical and architectural monuments, as well as truly mysterious natural monuments. With such an abundance of interesting places, everyone will find something to see in Georgia.
One of these attractions was the Khorkhebi Cave.
Location
The Khorkhebi glacier cave is located in the Georgian region of Kvemo Kartli (translated as: Lower Kartalinia), the height of the cave is 1,450 m from sea level, in the Tetri Tskaro municipal district, in the village of Kldeis on the Kldeisistskali River (the left tributary of the Khrami River).
There are many lava caves in Georgia, which are located nearby in groups of 2-5 pieces. Local residents explored the Khorkhebi cave in detail in 1945 and 1954.
What is it
The Khorkhebi ice cave appeared from granular lava, in appearance the cave is a huge block of stone, which has two entrances, passing through which you will find yourself in a cave tunnel. These two passages in the lava were formed due to earthquakes and gravitational attraction. Ice layers appear in several mines of the cave, they appear especially actively in the summer in the sultry heat. The bottom of the cave is represented by steps, the bottom depth is about 14 m in total.
The Khorkhebi Glacier is not only a natural monument, it is also an archaeological site and is of great value to science. History may also have been preserved in the glacier, since something similar to a place for prayers was found in the depths of the tunnel, which could be secret for enemies.
History
The son of King Vakhtang Vakhushti Batonishvili wrote about the Khorkhebi cave: "There is a cave in the rock in Khorkhebi, in winter it is very warm there like in a bath, and in summer cold springs flow and freeze in the cave, forming a large amount of pure crystal ice. This ice is mined every summer and brought to the ruler." Due to the fact that ice was delivered to the tsar for a long time, the glacier was called "Royal".
"Jorge" is translated from Georgian as "placers", and fits the description of the village, which is located at the beginning of the Bedene lava plateau.
Nowadays, the glacier is named Patara-Kldeisi (that is, translated into Russian: Maly Kldeisi), but earlier there was a Georgian settlement "Khorkhebi" at this place, which is proved by the found geographical records of Vakhushti Bagration from the 18th century.
