The autonomous state of Adjara is one of the regions of Georgia, it rightfully occupies a well-deserved place in the list of the best resorts in the world.
Adjara became famous as a seaside resort due to its mild subtropical climate, diverse vegetation, as well as the clean Black Sea. For some time Adjara was under the rule of Turkey, so the inhabitants of the region – Adjarians – are mostly Muslims, however, this does not affect their hospitality in any way. You will feel it while drinking Turkish coffee and snacking on the famous sweet baklava, which will be treated throughout your holiday.
Batumi The capital of Adjara is called the new Monte Carlo, and all because you will wander not through narrow streets, but along wide avenues among tall buildings. Access to the sea is an eight–kilometer boulevard, which is gradually turning into a city beach. There is an international airport and a small port here, and not so long ago casinos opened on the streets of the city, and a local attraction is gaining popularity – an open-air water park.
The regional authorities are constantly working on the appearance of the city. A stunning park near the coast with modern sculptures and fountains has been restored. One of the most spectacular and memorable sights of the city is the majestic moving sculpture "Love", created by Tamara Kvesitadze. The figures of a man and a woman made of metal move each in their own circle, meeting and diverging again and again.
Not far from Batumi, 15 kilometers away, you can find the Gonio fortress, which Pliny the Younger spoke about in the 1st century A.D. There is a legend that one of the twelve apostles, Matthew, can be buried here, but the Georgian authorities are prohibited from conducting archaeological excavations in this area.
Botanical Garden, the area of which is more than 100 hectares, will amaze every visitor. It is located 9 km from Batumi on the road to Kobuleti. In this picturesque place you will see more than 5000 species of subtropical plants from different parts of the world.
You will find the perfect Georgian beach holiday in the small resort town of Kobuleti, which is famous for its microclimate and famous beaches. Along the entire coast of Adjara you will meet many small resort towns waiting for their tourists – Makhinjauri, Gonio, Sarpi and many others.
In addition to coastal cities, there are resort places located in the mountains, among coniferous forests, stormy mountain rivers and waterfalls. One of these resorts – Beshumi – is located at an altitude of almost 2000 m above sea level, is famous for its crystal air, favorable for people with diseases of the respiratory system.
When visiting this region of Georgia, do not forget to taste delicious Adjarian khachapuri in the shape of a boat with raw egg and cheese, but be sure to eat right away while it's hot: break off a piece of dough and dip it in egg and cheese. And in Batumi, try Batumi khachapuri, which is made from salted boiled and then baked in the oven dough.
